As a new grad, my understanding is that resume's can look very different before and after graduating from college, so I am very grateful to have this opportunity to learn how to build my resume as a professional! I have updated my resume to include my current occupation, but it is still mostly in the style I was taught in college, so please help me format it differently if needed. Additionally, I could use help knowing how much I should elaborate on the projects I've worked on as a professional. Right now I have descriptions that are pretty vague, so I would love some feedback in that area too.

Yes you're 100% right in that resumes change the minute you are a student and a working professional. I learned these tips as well so I'm happy to share my tips for your resume specifically that I noticed:

• Move your Education section to the bottom of your resume instead of at the top. I almost misinterpreted your resume as a student even though you just recently graduated
• You don't need to list out what you did as a student, so I would remove those three bullet points
• Proofread your punctuation, commas are not needed in between a month and year
• Combine ASCE at the university and professional level together in your Involvement section 
• Formatting: your bullets and text under Halff Associates are not aligned with the rest of your resume
• Formatting: don't include periods at the end of your bullet point 

To answer your question about how to elaborate on projects as a professional, here are my tips:

• List out a few of the projects that you're currently working on and define your tasks that you worked for those specific projects (for me, I like to keep a log of my responsibilities so this will become a useful reference for you in your career)
• What phase of the project are you working on? (Preliminary planning, PA&ED, PS&E, final design)
• Instead of coordinating with clients and cities, what decisions were made from those meetings?

Couple comments on your resume:

• Space out your sections a little bit more, it's a little hard to read 
• Can you indicate when you started your MS degree? Put month/year - Present and add Expected Graduation: June 2021 so it's clear 
• Include June (year) for your summer intern experience
• Move your LinkedIn page at the very top with the rest of your contact info
• Remove "Authorized to work in the US" 
• Be consistent with your font style, I noticed that your Secretary for ASCE SEI experience is in a different style than the rest of your resume 
• I like the bold line that you have underneath Work Experience, use that same line thickness everywhere else in your resume so it looks more uniform

• I would recommend adding an opening statement of some kind discussing the value you would bring to an employer.

Couple comments on your resume:

• Generally great overall layout! Very easy to read and scan for specific things such as relevant coursework or skills.
• For improving the layout, you could right justify the location of your education (Carbondale, IL) like you did with your date ranges. This could help balance out your resume. 
• Great work customizing your LinkedIn profile URL!
• For your teaching assistant role, I recommend adding how many students in a class (even if it is approximate). 
  
  • similar to the comment above, you can improve your work experience by adding more quantitative data - for estimations, up to how much money was the total cost? Supervise work - of how many people? 
• For Publications, I recommend including the date that this was published. If this is ongoing you can write it as a date range i.e. Jan. 2019 - Present 
• For skills, you could add what version of the program i.e. AutoCAD 2020 
• For your interests listed, is there a way you can "show, not tell" them? I see that you have a seismic design course under relevant coursework, maybe is there a more recent class project you can highlight? I see the one from 2015. Other ways are joining a student competition in the field of your interests whether it is in seismic, CAD, or Model Simulations.

Hi Alex, 

I noticed you submitted a CV instead of a Resume. There are some differences even though they share a lot of the same data. My recommendation is to research these differences and try to have both a Resume and CV ready when looking for job opportunities. For your CV, I like your format and my recommendation is to add more data regarding the projects you participated in. I recommend including how you helped in the development of the projects - design, analysis, etc... In your professional experience, you have the years (duration) in year-year format and other in month/year format. I recommend to stick to one format, and review your spacing. The dates are not aligning when you looked at the paper. I hope these comments can help you a bit.

Hi Adam! I was assigned to review your resume and have the following comments and suggestions to make your resume stand out even more:

• You have your PE and ENV SP certification so add those to your name! It should read as Adam Eaton, PE, ENV SP. These are big achievements and recruiters may miss that because it wasn't listed on your first page
• I think your resume format would flow better if you switched your work experience responsibilities and your employment dates so the body of your resume is aligned left, and the dates are aligned right (that way you can fit your employment dates on one line to fill in that white space)
• You have a lot of great experience so it doesn't seem necessary to include all the jobs you've had back from 2011 on your resume since it exceeds 1 page (that's what LinkedIn is for)
• I would recommend removing your coursework from your resume since you have graduated already and you have plenty of working experience to vouch for your knowledge 
• It seems repetitive to have a section for Professional Affiliations, Leadership, Volunteer and Public Service and then again under your Education. I would recommend removing it from your Education since some of it bleeds into your professional experience

Hi Grace! I checked out your resume and have the following comments. Please let me know if you need any clarification and I'll do the best I can to help.

• Overall the layout is very clean which is great.
• I would encourage you to include an objective section in your resume.
  • You'll want one version of your resume to be general for career fairs and such. But any specific companies you apply to you should customize your resume for that company.
  • In your objective section make sure to list your personal values and skills and how they align with the overall mission and vision of the company or position that you are applying for. You will need to put in some work to research the company but if you're not willing to do that up front, how serious can you really be about getting the job right?
• Under Education
  • I would only include relevant coursework if there is space after adding the objective. If you include the courses, make sure you only list courses that are relevant to the specific position you are applying for. And also best not to include general courses like senior design that everyone has to take.
  • Remove the coursework from the Global experience section. You can include relevant courses in the section above. Personally, I would probably take out the global exp all together but you could leave in if there is space.
• Under your work experience
  • Put the year after each month. I understood what you were doing by the time I got to the third item but most employers don't look at your resume for very long so you want to be overly clear and not add any possible confusion.
  • For a new graduate, I think you do a good job of sharing your experience here.
  • Some areas you don't need to be so specific - "Designed 6, 8, 12 inch water main replacement...." and you could just write "Designed water main replacement...."
  • Some areas you should be more specific - "Updated the City of Cambridge GIS...." What did you update? Who benefited from this update? Can you quantify the benefit, if so list it here?
    • Another example "Conducted drainage calcs....". Calcs for what? Can you name specific calcs and design methods here? You can use this space to showcase key words that would establish yourself as an ideal candidate.
• In the footer
  • I like the references upon request statement
  • I would remove the Revised date. This might help remind you when you last edited the resume but I don't need to see this when I receive a resume. I would expect that if someone gives me a resume, it is up to date.

Essentially, your resume is a one page guide that helps me learn about you and grab my interest enough to call you in for an interview. Find ways to use key words from the job posting description. Get specific when highlighted skills, technical expertise, and values you brought to previous employers/clients. Hope this helps!

  • You'll want one version of your resume to be general for career fairs and such. But any specific companies you apply to you should customize your resume for that company.
  • In your objective section make sure to list your personal values and skills and how they align with the overall mission and vision of the company or position that you are applying for. You will need to put in some work to research the company but if you're not willing to do that up front, how serious can you really be about getting the job right?
• Under Education
  • I would only include relevant coursework if there is space after adding the objective. If you include the courses, make sure you only list courses that are relevant to the specific position you are applying for. And also best not to include general courses like senior design that everyone has to take.
  • Remove the coursework from the Global experience section. You can include relevant courses in the section above. Personally, I would probably take out the global exp all together but you could leave in if there is space.
• Under your work experience
  • Put the year after each month. I understood what you were doing by the time I got to the third item but most employers don't look at your resume for very long so you want to be overly clear and not add any possible confusion.
  • For a new graduate, I think you do a good job of sharing your experience here.
  • Some areas you don't need to be so specific - "Designed 6, 8, 12 inch water main replacement...." and you could just write "Designed water main replacement...."
  • Some areas you should be more specific - "Updated the City of Cambridge GIS...." What did you update? Who benefited from this update? Can you quantify the benefit, if so list it here?
    • Another example "Conducted drainage calcs....". Calcs for what? Can you name specific calcs and design methods here? You can use this space to showcase key words that would establish yourself as an ideal candidate.
• In the footer
  • I like the references upon request statement
  • I would remove the Revised date. This might help remind you when you last edited the resume but I don't need to see this when I receive a resume. I would expect that if someone gives me a resume, it is up to date.

Essentially, your resume is a one page guide that helps me learn about you and grab my interest enough to call you in for an interview. Find ways to use key words from the job posting description. Get specific when highlighted skills, technical expertise, and values you brought to previous employers/clients. Hope this helps!

​I reviewed the resume and I have the following comments. Please feel free to reach me if you need me to clarify. I hope these will help make the resume stand out.

• I recommend adding an Objective Section. This section is important when you are tweaking your resume to fit a specific job. You can add some of the data used in the "Key Qualifications" to complete the objective.
• Key Qualifications Section: I recommend subdividing this section (e.g. Affiliation, certification, skills, etc..). Also to move your education and experience before this section. 
  • In Texas E.I.T. stands for Engineer-in-Training, maybe double-check with Ohio professional Engineers and Surveyors Board if "Engineer Intern" is the correct term for this certification. 
• Experience Section. There are some additional space and spelling/grammar errors in the body. Also, check the test alignment. Some of the bullets points have left alignment while others have justify alignment. This is making the resume looks like it has different spaces.  
  • Other academic Projects: I feel you can move this one to Volunteer or maybe under the Affiliation if you create a new section as recommended above. 

In general, the layout is good. I recommend changing your font type. Calibri is usually easier to read once you go below 12pt font size. A resume is normally a one-page representation of yourself to help recruiters/managers to see if there is enough interest for an interview. At this time, the resume is consisting of two pages, and most of your experience is on the second page. My recommendation is to try to have a one-page resume, if not possible, try to have your experience on the first page.

First off, your resume has a lot of good content and a clear layout. It is easy to understand on first glance, which is the goal. I have some minor suggestions, but a major overhaul is not needed.

• I'd take out "Who is" in the overview. The second thought can just start with "Strong professional..." and only capitalize the first word, strong.
• Does "DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS OF HIGHWAY BRIDGES" need to be in all caps? If not, put in normal title writing (Design Specifications of Highway Bridges)
• Try and get the resume onto one page. I would reduce heading font size and white space a little, around words like Overview, Education, Experience, etc. in order to save space.
• The exact start & end date for each job doesn't hurt, but it also isn't required. Month and year are sufficient if that's easier for you.
• Can you provide a little more detail about "follow up construction works"? I see what kind of projects you were working on, but not what type of follow-up tasks you were completing or the skills you used/gained in doing so.
• Similarly, in your supervising and managing positions, please provide a bit more detail while still keeping it concise. How many people did you supervise? What are some on-the-job skills you can emphasize in these bullet points?
• Please watch capitalization. All of the words, except the first word, in each bullet point for your different jobs can be lowercase. On the other hand, the O in Microsoft Office should be capitalized.
• References section can be cut for space if you like. Companies won't hesitate to ask for references if they want them.

This section ideally would change each time you submit your resume, so that it is specific to the opportunity you are applying for. This can be the difference between being a "qualified" candidate, and a "preferred" candidate. 
• Throughout your resume you have words that are capitalized that do not need to be. For example, in "Integrated Material Testing and Analyzed ASTM standards..." Analyzed does not need to be capitalized. Also, in "Executed report and` document tracking..." remove the `. Make sure to carefully go over grammar and punctuation in your resume, as this is your first impression with a potential employer.
• I would re-word "Related Expediences" to "Work Experience". I would also highlight the work that you did, to better demonstrate your experience and your capabilities. For example, "Conducted all assigned calculations, reports, and spreadsheets..." List out what type of calculations you performed, and what type of reports and spreadsheets you created. This will better highlight your technical and report writing capabilities.
• I would re-word "Activities" to "Professional Organization Contributions". You could put your ASCE entries here too. I noticed that the format (font size, font type, bullets) of this section look to be different from the rest of your resume. You resume should have a consistent format, so verify that everything matches.

Hi Praveen,

This is a well-structured and clear resume. Most of my edits on the Word doc are just a bit of formatting and proofreading to make it feel smoother. Please see the comments in the document for other suggestions.

A few of the items (photo, signature) might be appropriate on a CV but do not generally appear on resumes. Similarly, a CV can be any length but I generally recommend keeping your resume to 1 page. You may need to rearrange things a bit or cut some less important information (a few of your other achievements at the bottom?)

Overall this was one of the cleanest resumes I've reviewed so good job! Some areas you can get more specific. Just don't get "wordy" for no reason. Every word you place on your resume should be there for a reason and have a purpose.

I have some comments below.

Suggest including an objective. Make sure you highlight your skills in a concise manner. This section should share with the company you apply for what skills you will bring to their office.

- Under related experience: What kind of practical hands on experience with traffic control? Be more specific
- You don't necessarily need to list "Other Employment". I would rename the Related Experience to Past Experience and remove the Other Emp. Heading.
- Under Operations Shift Lead – watch your wording here. I got confused which tense you were using and such.
                 - How did you ensure their needs were met? List 1-2 specific needs.

I would suggest adding a "Skills" section and list various certifications, software expertise,
