Join the ASCE Richmond Branch for a monthly technical lunch meeting where our community of civil engineers come together to network, learn about exciting new topics, and earn 1.0 PDH credit. This is a hybrid style meeting with both in-person and virtual options.
This month Howard Lusk and Keisha Voight of Jacobs will be presenting "Envision Sustainability Framework as an Environmental Management Planning Tool".

Abstract:
How do we measure environmental management for infrastructure planning and design?
As environmental professionals, we want to optimize a triple bottom line of people, planet, and prosperity for our projects. We want to increase the positive co-benefits, and decrease negative impacts, while being mindful of costs. How do we plan, establish actions, and measure results on these aspirations? What guidelines will help us to anticipate the future impacts of the project on the community, and on the ecosystem, as well as the future hazards to anticipate in the design?
The Envision Sustainability Framework from the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI) is the infrastructure industry standard in North America for guidance on these complex and interrelated issues. Even better, Envision is free for all to use as a planning tool. Award recognition is optional.
This presentation includes a quick overview of Envision, and a deeper look at how to use the Framework efficiently and effectively, with a focus on the topics most relevant to environmental management for infrastructure owners. Drawing from experience as Envision practitioners and Envision verifiers, insights will be provided on how to:
· Capture opportunities – tips and tricks
· Use the Envision guidance to elevate triple bottom line performance
· Interpret the manual criteria,
· Set project objectives,
· Evaluate alternatives,
· Guide decision makers,
· Engage stakeholders
· Create a prioritized action plan,
· Prepare documentation which assists in obtaining NEPA approval,
· Create design guidelines
· Create construction requirements.

Presenters:
Howard was the lead civil engineer and lead ENV SP for the AlexRenew Nutrient Management Facility (NMF), the first Envision award in Virginia (version 2 Platinum, 2016). Keisha was a key team member in preparing and editing the NMF Envision submittal documentation. Following that project, they have continued to independently develop expertise in Envision by conducting pre-assessments, writing action plans, presenting training to clients and designers, and leading teams of ENV SPs preparing narratives and supporting documentation. Both have been trained by ISI as Envision Verifiers, and have evaluated project submittals, and written comments on behalf of ISI.
