Monica, I really liked your use of "thumbs up" to ask if students were ready. Some students are not willing to speak up, but more readily engage with online tools like chat or reactions. To focus students' work in lab, I plan to have them work on shared spreadsheets and documents during lab that they can then upload easily. The breakout rooms were a lifesaver for short tasks in class or longer projects in lab, but the key was giving students specific (written) instructions on deliverables and expectations. I also look forward to using some of the tools for fun activities at the ASCE student chapter meetings (word clouds, annotations, and games like Jeopardy and kahoot). Thanks for getting this topic going!

Subject: management and tools for engagement in an online/blended classroom
The ExCEEd Community Exchange sessions have been fantastic!!! A common thread in the sessions' chat has been related to "management and tools for engagement in an online/blended classroom". Many tools can be used to engage students in your class (examples: word clouds, polls, pre-surveys, raising hand, thumbs up or clapping features , Google slides prepared with questions and activities for students to work on in breakout rooms, use of the private and everyone chat,s etc.). Lets' exchange other engagement tools available or other effective ways of using the tools demonstrated in the ExCEEd Community Exchange sessions. Feel free to discuss the challenges of engaging students too. For example, orchestrating the class using multiple electronics or multiple software will require a lot of preparation, or engaging a class with some students joining F2F and some attending virtually, etc.
I am hoping to hear from you about the tools that you have used or plan to use to engage your students in synchronous or blended classrooms.
