Description

The Coyote Canyon Mammoth burial site is located south of Kennewick off S Clodfelter Rd. (46.1587, -119.2648)

A lat/long pin location is given, as this is an active burial site on private property.

Tours generally last 1.5 hours. Children are encouraged to go, so please bring them if they are interested! About half of the time is spent in the Dig House for a presentation going over the discovery, history, and findings of the site, along with guided tours of laboratory activities and displays of key specimens and interpretive panels. The remaining time of the tour is spent outside at the actual dig site, with guided tours of the active excavation and wet screening operations.

Site Conditions:
NOTE: The Coyote Canyon Mammoth Site is
NOT ADA compliant.

The site is primitive, with unimproved gravel roads and parking areas.
The Dig House has no heating or air conditioning and limited potable water and restroom facilities. A portable toilet is available near the dig site.
The actual dig site is accessed via a 300 meter (328 yards) unimproved trail or a gravel road.
The site was once an industrial area, so glass, sharp metal objects, and other anthropogenic hazards are present. Additionally, there are a number of other natural hazards – uneven terrain, black widow spiders, snakes, scorpions, extreme temperatures, and sun exposure.
Those on a tour must wear appropriate footwear (no sandals or open toe shoes) and outerwear (hat, etc.) appropriate for the expected weather conditions.
Participants should bring all items needed for an extended outdoor experience, including but not limited to sunscreen, snacks, drinking water, etc.
Oh, and remember to bring your camera!
