Description

Washington DC DOEE Integrated Flood Model

Speaker: Christine Estes, PE, PMP, CFM

About the Presentation: Washington, DC is uniquely situated at the confluence of two tidal rivers and is vulnerable to flooding from three different sources: riverine, tidal/coastal storm surge, and interior.  As emphasized in the District’s updated 2024 Climate Projections & Scenario report, all three types of flooding in the District are intensifying as the climate changes. Interior flooding is happening more frequently in the District, causing significant damage to DC’s aging stormwater infrastructure and impacting the lives of residents. In 2022, the DC Department of Energy & Environment (DOEE) selected the AECOM Team to develop the Integrated Flood Model (IFM) to depict flood risk throughout the city, including interior flood risk based on modeling of the storm sewer system for the first time.
