Abstract:
The 8th Edition of the AASHTO Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets (the Green Book) has been under development for more than three years, with publication anticipated one to two years from now. All previous editions of the Green Book, through the current 7th Edition, have followed a consistent 10‑chapter format. In contrast, the 8th Edition represents a complete rewrite of the document.
The new Green Book will be founded on a performance‑based design framework and will significantly expand the consideration of roadway context. Rather than relying solely on the traditional urban and rural classifications, the 8th Edition will incorporate context zones to better reflect the surrounding land use, transportation needs, and stakeholder priorities.
Although the 8th Edition is not yet available, several National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) projects have already been completed and published that provide foundational guidance and background material expected to be incorporated into the new Green Book. This presentation will summarize and synthesize that published research, highlighting key concepts, principles, and methodologies that designers can begin applying now.
By understanding these emerging practices and research findings, practitioners will be better prepared to transition to the 8th Edition once it is published and adopted.
