Christopher Larson, PE
 
Chris has been providing geotechnical engineering with an emphasis on water resources infrastructure since 2015, across all aspects of a project life cycle. He has designed a variety of flood control projects, including dams and levees. Chris has additional experience stabilizing stream channels to prevent erosion and improve water quality. Additionally, he has served as a construction engineer of record and construction observer for a wide range of project types and sizes, helping owners and construction team complete successful construction projects. In addition to his professional work Chris has been an international volunteer since 2010 providing sustainable community driven infrastructure to rural communities in developing countries through Engineers Without Borders.

Texas A&M University Stormwater System Improvements Project: Brazos Riverbank Slope Protection

ABSTRACT: Stanley Consultants completed the AE design for the Texas A&M University Stormwater System Improvements Project. The primary scope of this project was to provide regional storm water detention, to correct known storm water erosion damage along White Creek,  to mitigate the impact of erosion at the outfall of the university's wastewater treatment plant, and to stop the progressing Brazos riverbank slope failures which threaten the university's infrastructure. These Brazos riverbank slope failures were expanding, putting the WWTP outfall pipe and a critical structure at-risk. To protect these structures Stanley used iterative slope stability modeling with GeoStudio and our local experience to predict the potential movement of the slope failures and associated residual soil parameters. This information was used to create an alternatives analysis which ultimately selected an anchored soldier pile wall to prevent the spread of the failure plane and protect the structures. The wall was designed to include additional progression in the slope failure as indicated by the iterative design process. Construction of this retaining wall was completed in 2019 allowing for a performance evaluation of the wall design and the current progression of the slope failure surface to determine the effectiveness of predicting slope failure progression using slope stability computer modelling. This presentation provides a detailed breakdown of the iterative design process, alternatives analysis, soldier pile wall design considerations,  construction observations, and a performance evaluation post construction.
