The Future City Competition: A civil engineer's guide

When:  Mon, Aug 31, 2026 from 01:00 PM to 02:00 PM (ET)

Civil engineers all over the country dedicate their time to DiscoverE’s international Future City Competition as mentors, judges, and technical resources. This international competition will reach approximately 100,000 middle and high school students this year. What is it about Future City that brings volunteers back year after year, and why does it remain such a powerful model for engaging the next generation?

This session explores how the program inspires students to consider careers as civil engineers by imagining, designing, and building cities of tomorrow using real world engineering principles. Participants will learn how their involvement in Future City helps foster systems thinking, sustainability, and practical design while creating meaningful connections between students, educators, and engineer mentors.

Speakers

  • Reed Brockman, P.E., M.ASCE, Vice President at AECOM in Boston
  • Robert Schomp, M.ASCE, Water Resources Engineer at Kleinschmidt (moderator)
