George Washington Memorial Parkway - North Section Rehabilitation

Finding Balance with Design Build

Presented by

Robert A. Morris, P.E., DBIA, ENV-SP

A Different Kind of Design-Build Project:  WSP will discuss the unique design and construction challenges behind the delivery of the Design Build project to rehabilitate the north section of the George Washington Memorial Parkway.  Creative design solutions were needed on a facility that is both a major commuter route as well as an important historic resource.

About the Speaker

Robert A. Morris, P.E., DBIA, ENV-SP

Robert Morris has over 30 years of diverse experience in project management and civil engineering design-related activities, developing projects from the planning and environmental phase through final construction completion. He has served as project manager, design manager, or lead engineer on a variety of projects throughout the United States. He is experienced in design-build and has managed numerous design-build projects since 2006. At WSP, Robert’s responsibilities include the management of the Herndon, VA office; project and task management for various projects in Virginia and throughout the Southeast; project pursuits and client relations management; oversight of project delivery and quality assurance/quality control; and management of the allocation of resources towards pursuit and proposal production, management, and delivery.  Prior to WSP, Robert spent 22 years at FHWA-Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division (EFLHD) as a senior project manager/special projects team leader, and highway engineer.  During his last 7 years at EFLHD, Robert led the Special Projects Team and was responsible for the successful delivery of design and construction projects involving significant public, political, and federal interest; popular and heavily traveled routes; diverse and highly sensitive environmental conditions; and where there was a national security impact. The Special Projects Team delivered projects in design and construction totaling approximately $900 million for delivery over a six-year span.

Robert has a BS in Civil Engineering from Virginia Tech, is a licensed Professional Engineer in VA, and is certified as a Design Build Professional by DBIA.  He and his wife Beth have 3 kids, ranging in age from 17 to 26.
