The Tsali Care Center: Deep Dynamic Compaction and A New Technique for Quality Assurance

A new care center is currently under construction in Cherokee, North Carolina. The site was heavily disturbed prior to construction, having been used as both a borrow site and a waste pit. As such, multiple suitors had considered the site for development and deferred. After the construction of the nearby Cherokee hospital, the Tribe began to reconsider the use of the property. Relatively straightforward approaches to supporting the facility using micropiles proved too costly, and BLE brought forward a relatively uncommon approach to use deep dynamic compaction (DDC). In the past, quality assurance was largely linked to qualitative observations of the DDC process, but in recent years a method has been developed to perform quantitative performance testing of the improved condition and was implemented successfully on this project.
