The Engineering With Nature Program: An innovative USACE research and application initiative

Brought to you by the COPRI Coastal Engineering Sciences Committee
Chair - Christopher Bender, Ph.D., P.E., D.CE, M.ASCE

Engineering With Nature (EWN) is the intentional alignment of natural and engineering processes to efficiently and sustainably deliver economic, environmental, and social benefits through collaboration. Through supports policy development, collaboration, research, application, and strategic communications, the EWN Initiative enables more sustainable delivery of economic, social, and environmental benefits associated with infrastructure. EWN supports the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Civil Works’ commitment to strengthen the Nation by bringing innovative and environmentally sustainable solutions to water resources challenges while contributing to the missions of its partners. While developed as a USACE initiative, Engineering With Nature is accomplished by the collaborative work of partners from around the nation and the world. As the Assistant Program Manager for the EWN program, Dr. Tritinger’s role is to support and manage EWN research tasks, collaborations, and USACE engineers as they apply Natural and Nature-Based Features (NNBF) to risk reduction coastal and fluvial designs. This includes; 1) engagement with policymakers, USACE districts, and organizations outside the government, 2) supporting team development and needs for innovations within the practice, and developing monitoring, and adaptive management plans, 3) supporting on-the-ground projects and demos, and 4) advancing technology transfer to scientists, researchers, stakeholders, and the public. Dr. Tritinger will discuss the EWN structure, research tasks, ongoing EWN efforts, and her role in the program.
