    Kia ora/Bula Vinaka/Talofa/Mālō e lelei/Kia orāna/Halo

I hope this email finds you in good health.

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself-Sateesh Kumar Pisini, the current Secretary and former President of the ASCE New Zealand Section. As Parsa and Nives have introduced the ongoing board members of the ASCE-NZ group, I would like to reaffirm our commitment to strengthening and expanding this society. One of our key initiatives is to establish student chapters in both Northland (potentially at the University of Auckland, University of Waikato, Auckland University of Technology, Massey University – Auckland) and Southland (University of Canterbury). Additionally, we aim to actively engage with and connect the society with the Civil Construction Industry as needed.

I would also like to highlight that ASCE student membership is completely free for students from Level 6 to Level 10, including:

    • Diploma (Level 6)
    • Graduate Diploma (Level 7)
    • Bachelor of Engineering Technology – BEngTech (Level 7)
    • Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) – BE(Hons) (Level 8)
    • Postgraduate Diploma – PGDip (Level 8)
    • Master's (Level 9)
    • PhD (Level 10)

I encourage you to share this information within your academic and professional networks.

Furthermore, we are equally committed to growing ASCE membership in the Pacific Island nations, as members from Fiji, Solomon Islands, Samoa, Tonga, Cook Islands, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Tokelau, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu are affiliated with the ASCE-NZ Section. Having worked as a civil engineering faculty member in Fiji for eight years, I strongly believe there is significant student engagement in civil engineering programs under Washington Accord (in progress) and Dublin Accord-accredited frameworks, particularly at Fiji National University (FNU) and the University of the South Pacific (USP).

To stay updated on ASCE-NZ activities, I invite you to follow our LinkedIn page: American Society of Civil Engineers New Zealand: About | LinkedIn

Moving forward, we will be regularly reaching out to ASCE-NZ members to notify them about upcoming technical and professional development opportunities in Aotearoa and internationally, particularly in civil engineering and interdisciplinary fields such as sustainability and climate change. These include:

    • Technical workshops, summits, symposiums, conferences, and keynote sessions featuring academia, industry, and government representatives.
    • Fully funded scholarships for students pursuing Level 8 to Level 10 qualifications.
    • Free CPD (Continuing Professional Development) sessions.
    • The establishment of student chapters and young engineers' communities.
    • Industry-driven initiatives aimed at bridging the gap between academia and practice.

Moreover, we aim to collaborate closely with Engineering New Zealand, Engineers Australia, and Engineers Fiji (formerly the Fiji Institute of Engineers) to foster knowledge exchange and professional development within the civil engineering sector.

In the near future, we will be organizing a Meet & Greet session for all ASCE-NZ members to gather valuable feedback, comments, and suggestions on how we can enhance the society's impact by delivering relevant technical and professional activities.

We look forward to your active participation and support in advancing the ASCE-NZ Section. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or suggestions.

    Sateesh Kumar Pisini, CP, M.ASCE
