In the spirit of continual improvement and after some feedback from your fellow competitors, the SSC Rules Committee is creating a Sustainable Solutions Getting-Your-Team-Started Accelerated Task Committee (ATC) with the goal of making Sustainable Solutions accessible to all ASCE student chapters. We hope to remove barriers to entry and help teams take their first step in competing.
Are you interested in being a member of the ATC? Please read below to find out more details.
If interested, please apply by completing the interest form by July 15, 2026. You will receive a response by July 20, 2026.
What will you accomplish on this committee?
Create clear and accessible guidance for the ASCE Sustainable Solutions Competition that will help first-time or redeveloping teams feel comfortable competing in this competition.
How will this be accomplished?
The student-led task committee will develop a rules appendix that assists student teams to start to feel comfortable a) starting, b) continuing through the school year, and c) realizing their progress at their student symposium. The final deliverable will be included in the 2027 ASCE Sustainable Solution Competition (SSC) rules which are posted in early September 2026.
The SSC Rules Committee will provide scope and guidelines as outlined. They will review the draft deliverable and provide comments and suggestions limited to the following: spelling/format/outline organization and specifics to ensure applicability to possible future iterations of SSC.
This student task committee will have the opportunity to review these suggestions and comments from the SSC Rules Committee and perform any revisions prior to finalizing the deliverable.
What is the length and time commitment?
This task committee will last for the duration of 1.5 months – beginning around mid-July through end of August 2026. Each member should expect to contribute 8 hours minimum over the duration of these 1.5 months. For the appointed ATC Chair, that member should expect 16 hours minimum over the duration of the committee.
What is the general timeline?
• Seeking members in July
• Weekly meetings mid-July through mid-August
• Draft deliverable due mid-August
• Final deliverable due at the end of August
Do I need to have done SSC previously?
Yes, members should have at least 1 year of SSC experience prior to joining the task committee.
How many spots are available?
We are looking for up to 5 ASCE student members to join ATC.
What do I get out of it?
Glad you asked! Lots of things! It's a cool committee! It'll be a great resume builder. You will make an impact on the success and future of SSC. You'll help to better align your own team and learn best practices from other teams.
What other support will we have?
Sam Potts, a long-time member and Chair of the SSC Rules committee, will provide SSC support. However, expect the Rules Committee to otherwise have limited involvement. In addition, an ASCE Staff member, Amber Champ, will provide operational support.
I'm interested in being the ATC Chair. How does that work?
On the Google Form, submit your qualifications and an outline/plan for the task committee, as well as any additional information. If you are not selected as Chair, you may still be selected to serve on ATC.
Is there anything else I should know?
At this time, ATC members will not be allowed to participate in 2027 topic and rules development. (You may still compete in the 2027 competition)
