  • 1.  ASCE Helping Schools During Quarantine

    During this time when many school buildings are closed ASCE can help! Make certain that your members, local teachers, and schools know what ASCE has to offer them.

    1. Share Everyday Engineering: STEM@Home with your membership and the local schools. ASCE has a growing library of activities and videos intended for at-home use. Everyday Engineering: STEM@Home materials can be found at https://www.asce.org/pre-college_outreach/. We just added a 3rd how-to video to the series: Build an Earthquake Resistant Structure.
    2. Reach out to your local schools and offer to talk online about civil engineering. Teachers are desperately seeking out quality online materials and love the opportunity for their students to meet professionals.
    3. Make certain that your Section/Branch and Younger Member Forum have identified Outreach Champions to ASCE Headquarters. These Outreach Champions will be part of a network that functions to assist educators around the world. Champions are the first point of contact when ASCE Headquarters has new materials or receives a request. Champions also inform ASCE of what's going on at the local level, helping to share best practices. Anyone can be an Outreach Champion! Just email the name and contact information to outreach@....

    Who should you contact? The best place to start is with your local teachers and schools. If you still have a child in school make certain to connect with his/her teacher. Don't have a child in school yourself but still want to help? Contact your friends and ASCE members who do and make a joint connection.

    Has anyone done something like this already? Have your local schools done anything unique during quarantine?

    Hi Ericka

    The idea of providing some educational content for local schools was always part of the SEI Graduate Student Chapter of Michigan Tech. We had a couple of events (http://www.cee.mtu.edu/sei/old_events.html) for local schools and we were planning on participating in Family Science & Engineering Nights, however, due to COVID-19, we had to cancel our events. As part of the community, we would like to provide some educational content for kids and help teachers at these uncertain times. Please let me know if you are aware of any local schools that are interested. Also, if any other member who wants to participate or contribute to the cause, please let us know.

    Hi Arman, 
    Those sound like great events the group had planned. Hopefully they will still be able to be held after all this has passed or when school resumes again. 

    I am not aware of any schools that have expressed interest. But reaching out to the districts via the contact information on their websites may be your best bet. 

    If something does get setup, I would be happy to contribute/participate!
