What is a Community of Practice?

 

Community of Practice is:

       Draft ASCE Definition: Communities of Practice (COP) are an informal group of individuals from throughout the Society who share a common area of interest in the arena of civil engineering.  A COP provides a forum for individuals to share best practices, disseminate knowledge, incubate innovative ideas, identify needs, and provide for the networking of members.  

 

With Communities of Practice you can:

  •    Improve communication
  •    Build better practices
  •    Break down silos

 

     How do I find a community?

Click on the community. Sign-in and click the “Join the Community” button.

 

     How do I engage in the CoPs?

 

  •    Reply to a discussion post
  •   Create a discussion post
  •   Ask a question
  •  Attend a meet-up
  •   Connect with people who share an interest in the CoP
  •   Share best practices in a blog
  •   Volunteer to help lead the community

 

     What is the difference between a blog and discussion post?

 

Blogs are longer than discussion posts and are intended to be one-way communication. Discussion posts are meant to create a conversation.

 

     How can I reduce/manage the number of notifications I receive from COP’s?

You can select:

“No Email” – Unsubscribe.

“Daily Digest” – Discussion posts from the entire day in that group.

 “Weekly Digest”- Discussion posts from the entire week in that group.

“Daily Consolidated Digest” – Shared files, discussion posts, events, and announcements for the day in one consolidated digest.

“Weekly Consolidated Digest” - Shared files, discussion posts, events, and

announcements for the week one consolidated digest

 

     What if I need to change my post in a discussion?

 

You can select the dropdown arrow at the top of your post to edit. Don’t forget to hit save. You will need to contact an administrator to delete a discussion post.

 

     Where do I find my content?

 

Go to your profile and select my contributions and then my contributions. You can then filter your drafts, published posts and scheduled posts.

 

     How do I change my signature, so it automatically appears the way I like it in my posts repeatedly?

 

Via your profile, select your signature to edit the text to your liking.  You might include your section, branch, group, and/or other ASCE role/involvement you’d like to share.

 

     How do I update my profile?

 

We recommend updating your bio and profile picture in your ASCE Collaborate profile by clicking on the avatar on the upper right-hand side of the screen once you are logged in. Contact information, job title, education, and license are populated by the ASCE Membership database. You can edit your account here.      Can I change my display name?

 

Contact [email protected] to change your name.  You can change your nickname directly via your profile.

 

     Is there a workload commitment to joining a COP?

 

No, Communities of Practice are intended for individuals to participate at their own pace.

 

     How do I change what information others can see?

 

You can edit your Privacy Settings here:  https://collaborate.asce.org/profile/myaccount/my-settings?section=privacy

Please visit the Privacy Settings in your profile to decide what information you would like to be displayed. You can control who views what content by selecting the following

  • Public – Everyone can see.
  • Members Only – Only ASCE members.
  • My Contacts – Only people who you have accepted as a contact.
  • Only Me – No one but yourself.
