When I attended college back in the dinosaur age, it was still possible for a young person to work their way through, and that is what I did. The cost of college has far outpaced the general inflation in the economy, making this pathway nearly impossible. I don't have an answer to your questions, other ...

Based on my experience, switching specialities happens quite often. I used to advise young engineers that one could focus on the technical aspect of a particular speciality and become more and more knowledgeable in a particular speciality area. Or, one could go in a direction of a broader focus, and ...

Retired now, but during my working career, I learned that most problems on a project were brought about by or partially caused by communication problems. Many engineers I worked with were not very adept at putting themselves in the contractor's place. Plans were often poorly put together and not detailed ...

Hi Amanda. I believe you will need to pursue a masters degree first. I had a colleague recommend to me many years ago to not obtain an undergraduate degree and doctorate degree from the same university. You need a wider view. I am not familiar with schools in your area. Many schools will help ...

It has been mentioned already that some states will not let you sit for the PE unless you have a BSCE. You may want to check into this before you decide. Outside of that issue, if civil engineering is what you want to do, go for it. Don't spend your working career regretting you did not follow your dream. ...

I would talk to Geo Tech firms in your area. Most need field people, and you could work on your Master's degree while working. ------------------------------ Stacey Morris P.E., M.ASCE ETI Corporation West Memphis AR (901) 758-0400 ------------------------------

Hi Alicia. Congratulation in advance on your civil engineering degree! Starting salary in the Northern Virginia/D.C. area should be higher than in most parts of the country. Most, though not all, employers will have a very good idea of what the range should be and will be competitive in their offer. ...
