Dear members and colleagues in Taiwan,
Many of us in the United States awoke Wednesday morning to the horrible news of the devastation that struck your homeland. Taiwan is an engineering and economic leader with global reach, and your tragedy touches us all. We extend to you our heartfelt sympathies.
In the aftermath, the civil engineering community will help assess structural safety and rebuild what has been damaged or destroyed, but nothing can replace the loved ones lost. We can only hope that time may heal your grief and that your efforts to rebuild will reveal ways to limit the impact of future tragedies.
