Tangier Island is Disappearing and Could Disappear Completely as early as 2030

Tangier Island near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay is about 95 miles from Washington, D.C. as a crow flies and about 67 miles south of Poplar Island. Tangier Island is disappearing and Poplar Island is growing. Disappearing islands in the Chesapeake Bay are not a new phenomenon but growing islands are. What's the big difference? Nobody lives or ever will live again on Poplar Island and Tangier is one of the two islands in the Chesapeake that is still inhabited although its population is declining. According to Cronin in his book Disappearing Islands in the Chesapeake more than 100 people lived on Poplar Island in 1900. Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman both vacationed on Poplar Island. In 1900 just under 700 people lived on Tangier Island and today the population is a little over 700. The residents of Tangier Island have been asking for protection for their island for as long as anyone can remember but it doesn't seem likely to happen. Why?
