  • 1.  Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate in sewage

    Posted 07-12-2017 02:31 PM
My client, a municipal authority in Pennsylvania with primarily residential sewage customers, has had numerous positive sample results for Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate throughout the sewage collection system.  I understand this is a plasticizer that is soluble in oil, but not in water.  It is not present in the potable water.  Any thoughts or info on how it may be getting into the wastestream would be appreciated.  [I am fairly certain it is not lab error, but still investigating.) Thanks, Dave

Any plastics or chemical production facilities that discharge to that sewer system?  "Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate" aka DEHP, is an endocrine disrupting Phthalate listed as one of the two "Plastics of Particular Concern" by the Environment and Human Health group, along with BPA.

Here's an article on it from the Endocrine Science Matters organization, and another from the Science and Environmental Health Network.  It's a Persistent Bioaccumulative Toxic Chemical (PBT).

Cosmetics and personal care products, etc.?  Wikipedia says there is a producer in Neville Island, Pennsylvania.
