I recently read an article from the Washington Post which contained the following excerpt: "Climate scientist Jason Box has proposed covering Greenland's glaciers with white blankets to reflect sunlight, keeping the ice frozen. In a documentary for Discovery UK, Box and colleagues demonstrated the ...

Good discussion. I would like to address one issue that has been brought up: hardening of the electric grid and provision of generators for sewage collection systems. I served as Director of Palm Beach County, Florida Water Utilities - the third largest water/wastewater utility in the state - during ...

I agree with Joseph's post regarding the timing of getting a Masters Degree in an engineer's career progression. A recently graduated Bachelors Degree student most often has learned problem solving skills but generally only the basics of the more rigorous technical skills required in the various disciplines ...

This is a great thread and there have been many valuable responses. The one personality trait that has served me well in my career has been the ability to communicate confidently to engineering teams, supervisors, governing boards and outside stakeholder groups. This trait did not come naturally to me. ...

This is a good one. Doesn't add much value to the discussion except to illustrate a widely held stereotype of the personalities of engineers. ------------------------------ Bevin Beaudet P.E., M.ASCE President/Owner Bevin A. Beaudet, P.E., LLC. Bethlehem PA ------------------------------

I am a licensed engineer but not in RI. I was hired by the Burrillville Sewer Commission as an expert witness in a case against an equipment vendor. The job required a lot of engineering calculations. The dependents filed an objection to my expert witness role because I am not registered in RI. Here ...

I sincerely doubt that any state board could enforce any type of action against you for an email that lists you as a PE in your identified state. That's ridiculous. ------------------------------ Bevin Beaudet P.E., M.ASCE President/Owner Bevin A. Beaudet, P.E., LLC. Bethlehem PA ----------- ...

I am a registered engineer but not in Rhode Island where I was once hired as an expert witness for a RI wastewater utility. The defendant filed a petition to disallow me as an expert witness in the case because I was not registered in RI. This petition was quickly thrown out due to the following RI Supreme ...

I heartily agree with Alexander's comment that student engineers need to be taught more about the connection between technical problem solving and public policy. As a public Water/Wastewater Utility Director of over 20 years young engineers would come to me after months of hard work and present a technically ...

Silky you have brought up a very important issue. I have read through the comments and agree with Ken's suggestions. It appears that you are an experienced mentor, so you know the ropes regarding mentoring. I have been virtually mentoring an engineer for nearly two years, and so have some experience ...

Good question, Stephanie. Im my long career, I have reviewed literally thousands of resumes while hiring over a hundred people in engineering or professions related to water utilities. I don't think that there was one resume that I was not able to deduce a person's age. A resume that doesn't end up in ...

Stephanie, I'm one of those engineers in the networking category. Every one of the six jobs in my 50-year career was offered to me through my network. That being said, by "network" I don't mean just colleagues in professional associations. My government agency jobs (three jobs and the one I eventually ...

Maher, excellent question. I learned my leadership skills in the same way as you probably have, as a commissioned officer in the US Army. When I returned to civilian life I honed those skills through reading numerous books written by successful civilian leaders. If I had to recommend only one book it ...

I would ask the candidates how they propose to divide increased federal funding into the many and various types of infrastructure needs. In my long career as a water/wastewater engineer, our infrastructure needs have generally received the short end of the stick compared to more visible infrastructure ...

I retired in 2014 at age 67 as Director of Palm Beach County, Water Utilities. My career was split evenly between public agencies and consulting engineering. I have been active nationally through professional associations. When I retired I was bored to death and needed to get out of my wife's hair. ...

I would suggest that a young engineer join one or more professional associations relevant to your technical field and become active in them. Volunteer for technical committees. Help organize, not just attend events. Attend seminars and conferences. One way to pretty much guarantee that your employer ...

Brian, as a member of ASTM Committee F-17.67, Trenchless Technolgy CIPP Rehabilitation, I know for a fact that ASTM Standards can be obtained digitally in PDF format. I'm pretty certain in today's internet age, this would be true of other standards associations. ------------------------------ Bevin ...

Well said, Dwayne. I couldn't agree more. If anything should be rigorous for experienced engineers it is the continuing education requirement. Years ago Florida went from 8-hours (PDH's) every two years to 18. One hour of Rules, Laws and Ethics and 6 or 8 hours I believe for the engineers area of practice. ...

To the best of my knowledge license engineering exemptions are either a matter of law or Professional Engineering Boards in each state. That means a political approach needs to be taken to modify them. It is unlikely that all exemptions will ever be removed. Perhaps state ASCE Government Affairs Committees ...
