Susan, Thanks for your response. There are a number of things that I did not include in my initial comments. I also had a chemistry set. I actually got more enjoyment out of using the alcohol lamp to bend and shape glass tubing. Didn't get much into the mixing of various chemicals to prove or examine ...

Little did I know how my childhood toys would lead to a career in engineering. The actual sequence may be a bit fuzzy, but I think my first toy was a truck crane. Fully operable as far as the crane functions were concerned. Mom let me use a box of pasta as a substitute for real dirt (indoors of course). ...
