  • 1.  The "Perfect Attendance" Mentality

    Posted 11 days ago

    Hey all,

I'm curious to know about your experiences with perfect attendance during school and how it has affected you in your professional life.

    • Were you someone who was driven to achieve perfect attendance in school?
    • If so, do you think this mindset influenced your approach to going to work, especially when you're not feeling well?
    • Did your perspective change at any point in your life, such as during the covid pandemic?

I'd love to hear your stories and insights on this topic. Thanks!

    1. Yes. Although I wasn't "driven", it wasn't something I specifically focused on. It was more of knowing I'll learn more being there, plus tuition isn't cheap, why would I not go? There was never anything more important to do.
    2. Yes. I often go to work even when I'm sick, or work from home. In fact, every now and then I take a day off just to catch up on property/home maintenance, and I feel guilty knowing everyone else is in the office working.
    3. Yes, as my children grow, my view on always being in the office, and always being on time has changed. Nowadays, the time I arrive and leave may shift a half hour, or hour, from time to time, depending on school, summer camp, how motivated my kids are in the morning, or what special events they have, etc. And, I no longer feel guilty whenever my time away from the office during the work week is spent with my kids.  Of course, I always try to be available.

In school, I was dealing with a few chronic health conditions that had made perfect attendance unattainable for me. I'm glad I learned to take the time to take care of myself early on but, where I can, I try to limit time off to communicable issues and make other accomodations that don't eat into my available time off for the more ongoing medical stuff. I only have so much time off and I'd like to enjoy it!

    Greetings,

I have moved many times in my lifetime, almost as many years as I am.  So my attendance has suffered.
My father worked for the Peace Corps, so he became accustomed to picking up on the drop of a hat.
He gave me some of his knowledge of the systematic way of bridging the attendance with the situations.
However, I was more-so succumbed to illness until I could function normally to see to my attendance,
particularly because my professional is generally much more stationary than his, and so I had to adjust
to a generational system and an occupational system, vs. just a generational system.

But I found some aspects in faith that were like a Master leading the blind through a tunnel.  So such has
enabled me in guidance to develop a physical system to transcend the generational boundary and just
focus on the occupational one.  Since understanding the overall effect of constitution of oneself, I have
been on a track of stabilizing my attendance on the positive side.

    Sincerely,

Thanks everyone. These all seem like really candid self-assessments and really show part of the "human-side of the engineer".  I really appreciate all of the responses for me to reflect on myself.
