Hello, this is my second resume review event. My hope is that, since I've addressed the major flaws after the first review, there may be some fine-tuning to do. One thing that came up in the Engineering and STEM job fairs was the number of pages. Being a mid-career candidate makes it difficult to consolidate my experience.

Also, it was helpful to be directed to a multi-disciplinary engineering orientation. Specifically, at Raytheon Intelligence & Space (now defunct), I was in a "specialty engineering" group in Department 22, Data Science & Technologies. So, my experience aligns with AI/ML, digital twins, geoscience applications for GIScience, geospatial science, and the like. Research Scientist roles at Google and AWS have been my favorite target roles to date.

    Paul,

I have reviewed your resume and you have had a lot of experience in your industry. Your resume is professional and includes a lot of key information. I think focusing less on your technical capabilities and focusing more on what you accomplished with those capabilities will improve your resume. I have made more specific comments on your resume, which is attached. Let me know if you have any questions on my comments. Thanks.

    Willow,

I have reviewed your resume and I like your professional format. Your resume contains all the key information and is easy to navigate. I think adding a Professional Summary section would be helpful. I have more details on this in my comments, which are attached. I think with these minor changes your resume will be even better. Good work!

I have reviewed your resume, and I am impressed with all of your extracurriculars! Your resume is professional and easy to navigate. I think with some reorganization and removing some content, you can get your resume down to a single page, which I would recommend. Attached are my comments that detail how I think you can achieve this. Let me know if you have any questions on my comments. Thanks.

I am submitting my resume for review. I am an ASCE member and a Civil Engineer currently working in materials and geotechnical inspection in Phoenix.

I'm currently pursuing my Master's in Civil Engineering and would appreciate feedback on how to effectively bridge my "boots-on-the-ground" field inspection experience with my move toward more specialized technical and engineering roles.

Thank you to the coaches for their time and feedback!

    Hi Mojahid,

Your resume is well laid out and has a lot of good information. I commented on a few areas where you could consolidate or remove info to keep it a little more concise. Regarding bridging your on-the-ground experience with your move toward technical/design roles, I think you are showing this already with your emphasis on data, standards, and documentation; but if you wanted to add some relevant coursework to either of your degrees especially your current MS pursuit, that might also help emphasize that transition in focus.

    Best of luck!

    Thanks,

    Katie

    Hi Ariful,

Your resume is off to a good start. The biggest comments I have are to be consistent in formatting and to expand a bit about your specific accomplishments in your experience. I left some suggestions for where you can do that, but it's up to you to showcase your work!

    Best of luck!

    Hi Nischal,

Your resume presents your experience really clearly and has a lot of great detail. My main suggestion is to trim it down a bit, so I left suggestions on where you could optimize your use of space on the page and also suggestions of items that don't need to be included at this stage. If you are still short on space, you could reduce the words in some of  your longer experience bullets.

    Best of luck!

    Thanks,
    Katie

Hi! Thank you for the opportunity to review my resume.

I am a Construction Engineering Technology student seeking a summer internship in heavy civil or commercial construction, ideally in the DFW area. I am particularly interested in project engineering or field engineering roles.

I would appreciate feedback on how to better tailor my resume for construction internships, especially regarding technical skills, formatting, and how to better highlight my coursework and leadership involvement. I am also open to suggestions on how to make my resume more competitive for larger firms.

Hello! Thank you the opportunity to have my resume reviewed. I am recent graduate from the University of California - Davis and have been looking to gain experience in the civil engineering industry in order to progress my career. During college, I wasn't able to get an internship so I have very little experience in terms of job experience. However, I do have experience in projects I did during college. I look forward to hearing your recommendations and tips on what to change or add in my resume.

    Hello Workshop Team,

I am a recent graduate seeking an entry-level civil engineering or BIM/VDC position. I have struggled to wade through all the conflicting resume advice, and I hope to come away from this workshop with a better understanding of industry standards. I'd appreciate a thorough assessment along with any suggestions for improvement. I am aware of two occasions on which a previous version of my application was rejected due to automatic filters, and I hope that the current iteration has minimized that risk. I also cannot seem to find the attached ASCE Resume Rubric, but I did find one from the Spring 2025 workshop and would like confirmation that it is the most recent version.  Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to your feedback.

Stephanie, someone else on our team will be reviewing your resume for specific comments/suggestions, but I can confirm that I have not made updates to the rubric since last year.

You're so right that there are a lot of conflicting opinions on resumes, and that also means that different recruiters may be looking for different things. While they may disagree on some points, I think a clean resume goes a long way even if it isn't necessarily how they would write their own resume.

Below are my general considerations for resumes without looking through yours specifically:

I think the best thing you can do is try to put yourself in the shoes of the person who will be looking at your resume. If you know it will go to a computer filter first, try to really tailor it to contain the key words from the job posting that pertain to your qualifications and experiences. If you are going to a career fair or cold-emailing your resume to a company, a clear and brief objective statement can be very helpful to make sure the resume ultimately ends up in the correct department's hands. No matter the intended recipient (electronic or human), a format with clear organizational structure with labels will help the reviewer find the information they are scanning for at a glance.

I like to view resumes like a movie trailer. You need it to make your target audience want to buy a ticket (offer an interview) without giving away the whole plot (giving so much information that it is overwhelming to look through).

Below are my comments/suggestions for your resume:

    • If you don't want to put your street address, you don't have to include that. Most job correspondence is electronic now. If you are wanting to stay in the same geographic area or let employers know you are local, you could leave the city and state.
    • I discourage people from adding a  "soft skills" section to their resumes since they are often similar skills listed that anyone (whether or not they have that skill) can add to a resume. I find that they take up room on your resume without telling the reviewer anything that they necessarily believe just by being told. I think those skills are better demonstrated through your work experience descriptions and in an interview. For example, collaboration can be demonstrated by describing your role in a group project or on a team. Consider how you can show those skills in the other sections of your resume.
    • I would remove the bold formatting from "real-world traffic data collection and interpretation" since it is the only non-title bolded text.
    • One last minor comment: in your file name, take off the last "e" in resume

Overall, I think your format is clear and easy to navigate. Best of luck as you continue through your M.S. education!

Below are my comments/suggestions for your resume:

    • Decrease your font sizes and spacing so that everything fits on one side of a standard sheet of paper even after making the following changes
    • You don't have to put your mailing address if you don't want to. You can leave the city/state if you want to stay in that area
    • For your objective statement, you might add more specifics. For example, "transportation" or "land development" or whatever area(s) of focus you are interested in. You can also edit this line for specific positions if you are sending it to a specific company instead of taking to a career fair or uploading to a job search website
    • I would add your expected graduation date instead of "Fall 2021 - Present"
    • You do not have to add your GPA if you don't want to. A recruiter can ask if it is something they require as part of the application process.
    • Where you've worked isn't as important as what you did there. Give bullet point descriptions starting with verbs for your work. You can also combine items. For example, the Michigan DOT can be one section with both date ranges.
    • Don't use general terms like "Leadership" -- anyone can say that. It carries a lot more weight to show than to just claim it as an attribute. This can be demonstrated in your bullet points under your experience and your organizations. It can then be reinforced in an interview.
    • I would change your skills section to just be the technology related items. Be more specific with "CAD Programs" -- was it GeoPAK, OpenRoads, Civil 3D, etc.

In general, try to put yourself in the shoes of a resume recipient at a company. Do they know which specific department to give your resume to? Do they know when you will graduate? What can they tell about your specific experience that sets you apart from other candidates? Does the content of your resume give them the evidence that you are a detail-oriented leader who will make a great member of the team based on what you have shown them in the resume?

    Hi,

I am a student at Virginia Tech studying Smart and Sustainable Cities with a minor in Green Engineering. I am graduating this May and looking for an entry-level position. I am particularly interested in Green Building Consulting (i.e., working with sustainability frameworks such as LEED, ENVISION, and Living Building Challenge, etc.). I would highly appreciate any kind of feedback on my resume.

    Thank you very much,

Below are my comments/suggestions for your resume:

    • Since you are graduating soon, I would include a personal email address in addition to your school address so they can contact you after you stop using your school email. (Be sure it is a professional email address, preferably based on your name, and not something like soccerkidd15@...)
    • I would add an objective line at the top (below your name and contact information) that is very simple such as "Seeking full-time, entry-level position related to Green Building and sustainability frameworks." This line can be tailored to specific jobs in situations where you are applying to a specific company/role
    • I would add another " | " between Presidential Scholar and Graduation
    • Would everyone know what T&E reports are in your interest area? If not, I would spell it out under your Dewberry experience

Overall a very impressive resume in both content and format. Best of luck as you wrap up your last semester!

Below are my comments/suggestions for your resume:

    • I would flip your name and contact information so your name is at the top, and you can decrease the font some on your name if you need more room.
    • You can find opinions on both sides of this, but I personally do not think professional summaries add any value to an engineering resume. They are harder to skim and are often a repeat of the information you could/should include elsewhere. (In my opinion, your whole resume is your professional summary.) When I'm looking through resumes, especially at career fairs, I prefer an Objective Statement that is short and sweet. Something like "Civil engineering senior seeking Summer 2026 internship related to water or wastewater treatment." Something that helps the recipient know right away which position you are considering can increase the chances that it ends up in the right person's hands back at the office.
    • I would write out the month instead of using the ##/ format since that is easier to skim than the numbers running together
    • Try to come up with more specific bullet points under your internship job experience. What you have now is so vague that it could apply to almost any engineering internship. What did you do that might trigger a good interview conversation? Was there a specific interesting project you contributed to? What could make you more memorable than any other candidate with an engineering internship? (Your golf course descriptions look good already)
    • At this stage in your education, I would take off the "relevant coursework" section. As a student about to graduate from an ABET accredited Civil Engineering program, the recruiters will know in general what coursework you should have done already.
    • An undergraduate resume should fit on just the front side of one standard sheet of paper with font at a legible size.
    • Don't give your high school education information anymore. Now that you have nearly all of college under your belt, you don't need it. You can also take off the dual enrollment section. Removing those will give you some space back.
    • Since you have good work experience, I would reduce your volunteering section to more of a list with the names and dates. Treat it as a teaser for the interview.
    • Take off your high school capstone project for the same reason we're removing the HS education contents.
    • I don't, and I think many others don't, just take someone at their word on "soft" skills. Anyone can pull those words off the internet and put them there. Instead of listing those skills there, think about how you can incorporate examples of those skills into your work experience.
    • Since you already list the software in your education section, you can either change the "Skills" section to a "Software Skills" section and take it out of education or leave it in education and delete the "skills" section altogether.

In general, I think you have a great starting place to turn this from an good resume into a great resume.

Try to put yourself in the shoes of someone at a career fair who will talk to dozens or hundreds of students. Can they quickly skim your whole resume on one page? Can they tell at a glance what you're wanting to do? What will make your resume content memorable?

Think of your resume as the movie trailer for your interview. You need them to be interested enough in you to buy a ticket, but you don't have to give them every little detail upfront.

Below are my comments/suggestions on your resume:

    • Above your education section, I would add an OBJECTIVE section header with a line about what you are seeking. For example, "Civil Engineering postgraduate student seeking structural engineering internship for Summer 2026." This will help a recruiter get your resume connected to the right contact at the office.
    • If you need to make room to add the objective statement without decreasing your font size, I think you could remove the "|" and the information behind it from your academic projects section. (that would make the first project take up one less line). You could also change your technical skills section to combine BIM, Drafting, and Coding into one line if you needed more space. (They are find as-is if you can fit the objective statement.)

Overall an impressive resume. I like the bolded text making it easier to skim for specific experience. The quantifiable data in the descriptions also give interviewers the opportunity to have specific questions in mind.

Below are my comments/suggestions for your resume:

    • I would move the vertical "line" between the titles and the content to the left so they look more connected together
    • You do not have to include your physical address in your resume
    • Since you have the room at this stage of your schooling, I would move the titles from your experience section to a new line rather than up with the employer
    • I would put bullet points under your experience and start each line with a verb. For example, "Assisted aquarium, engineers with ____ testing"
    • I would also convert your achievements section to bullet points so they are easier to skim through than a paragraph format
    • Under education, add a section for your college (above the HS info) that includes the school, major, and expected graduation date. (Once you finish your sophomore year, I would remove the high school info since by that time you should have more than enough post-high school content to fill out your resume.)
    • I would take off "etc." from your interests list

Best of luck as you continue your college journey!

Below are my comments/suggestions on your resume:

    • I would change your "summary" to an "objective" and make it short and sweet. Something like "Civil Engineering PhD candidate seeking full-time employment with a focus in pavement or Geotechnical Engineering"
    • Think about what an employer at a company would want to see first. I would probably reorder the sections of your resume so that the professional service items appear before the selected publications and selected graduate courses.
    • I would switch your OSU email address to a personal email so that you don't lose contact with anyone when that email address is no longer available to you.

Overall it looks like you have some great experience. I recommend trying to put yourself in the shoes of a corporate recruiter instead of the typical academic mindset to see if there are any other changes you would make that may be helpful to that reviewer.

Best of luck as you wrap up your PhD studies, and Go Pokes!

    Hi Gabriel,

I get the impression from your resume (even if I didn't read your post) that you are interested in the structural realm of civil engineering. It might be good to find a way to state that in your Summary at the top, or otherwise in each position you apply to, find a way to write about how your background is a good fit.

My one nitpick might be that your line about "Core skills: Problem Solving, Critical Thinking, Collaboration" is one that is better shown than written.

In terms of organization, your resume is clear and easy to read and the bullets you have listed are already written in such a way that I think you are presenting your experiences well. Good luck to you.

    Hi Muhammad,

This is a clean resume that is easy to follow. Your resume being two pages may or may not be a turn off to some companies looking to hire an entry-level engineer. I do not know for certain if that is an outdated concern in the world of digital resumes, but if you wanted to pay it safe, it might be beneficial to see what you can do about changing your formatting to reduce the amount of white space between sections, and see how much of your experience you can fit solely on one page. Good luck.

The sentences under Summary are a good start but you finish with a sentence fragment. Consider adjusting to something like "Civil Engineering student focused on Geotechnical and Water Resources Engineering, bringing applied experience as a Project Engineering Intern in project coordination, technical design development, and multidisciplinary collaboration."

In terms of organization, your resume is clear and easy to read and the bullets you have listed are already written in such a way that I think you are presenting your experiences well.

    Hi Mohammad,

Consider adding a Summary section to the top of your resume to briefly explain who you are, what you can do, and how it applies to each specific job you apply to.

Your resume format is easy to follow and does a good job of showcasing your experience.

My one nitpick is that many of your sentences are a little too wordy and are trying to do too much.

Take the following example from your resume. Instead of:

Spearheaded the management of roadworks projects valued at 24 million while using project management tools such as P6 Primavera and Blue Beam that resulted in a 15% increase in project efficiency and a notable 10% reduction in material wastage.

    Try:

Led $24M roadworks projects, improving efficiency by 15% and reducing material waste by 10% using Primavera P6 and Bluebeam.

I believe making these types of changes to the rest of your resume will make your experience more readable and sound more professionally technical.

    Best of luck.

    Daniel,

You have an excellent resume with very solid experience.  In reading through your resume several times, I think the only critique I can provide is to change "Summary" to "Objective" and re-write this paragraph.  You should start this paragraph with more about "what are you looking for" and less about your experience because your experience writeups below provide an excellent picture of your experience. Also, with your years of experience, are you "actively pursuing your PE" - if so, weave that into your Objective statement - depending on the employers you will be applying to, licensed Engineers and Engineers seeking their license are often more attractive hires.

Good luck to you in the future and I hope these suggestions help you.

    Parisa,

Solid resume with a great deal of information but I think you need to refine the information.  My suggestions would be as follows:

    • Reformat top of resume to include a title block - make your name bigger - you want to be noticed.
    • Replace professional summary with Objective and make the objective specific to the job you are applying to.  I read your professional summary and I understand your experience but I did not understand where you are looking to go in your career - public? private? academic? - Don't summarize your experience - make the employers want to read it.  Your objective should be 2-3 sentences max.
    • Under Technical Skills and Key Strengths - I think you can delete Key Strengths and remove the first paragraph - your professional and educational experience already demonstrates you are a highly driven, motivated individual - your resume being 3 pages can be lengthy so try to minimize where possible.
    • In your Education Section - re-format - I had to read thoroughly to see your colleges - think about either re-formatting or bolding key points in certain sections to make your resumes easier for employers to read through.

Good luck to you in the future and I hope these suggestions help you.

Thank you to everyone who has work to make this available for members at no cost. This type of feedback from a seasoned professional is invaluable. I am very interested in finding a summer position that will allow me to engage in design while still being in the field, such as a geotechnical internship. Any advice on gearing my resume towards that kind of job would be greatly appreciated. Of course, any other constructive criticism is invited as well.

    Jonathan,

Your resume needs an Objective Statement - what type of position are you applying to? In your experience, you have roadway and wastewater experience - which avenue in Civil Engineering do you want to pursue? Also, this Objective statement can be fluid - it should be amended to match the position you are applying to.  I think you can edit and adjust margins to fit it in. Under certifications and awards, delete "recognized" and just include date to present.  Also, spell out some of the abbreviated words like UCF and IB.  I also think you should expand the bullets on your current Roadway experience even if you have to decrease some of the bullets in your school experience.  Practical experience outweighs all other in the resume.

Overall, solid resume with some of the suggested adjustments.  Good luck to you in the future.

    Regina,

Your resume needs some work - you have a decent framework, but you need more substance.   You need to start with an Objective Statement - what are you looking for, including the ability to relocate from NJ to FL.  Then, you need to reformat - information on resumes goes from high importance to lower importance.  With your years of service, after the Objective statement, your work experience should be next - for your current experience, expand on the type of projects that you have worked on - be more descriptive.  You should do the same for your other work experiences.  Your Education should come next - same comment - expand on your major/minor, etc.  Skills should come last and some of your skills should include some items from your summary section.

As I said, you have a decent foundation, but you need to expand your writing in all categories.  Good luck to you in the future.

    Mike

    Mostakimul,

You have a solid resume - I would just recommend changing the order of certain items.  I believe the order should be Objective (not Professional Summary), Education, Work Experience, Engineering Organization Technical Involvement, Certifications and then combine Technical and Additional Skills into Skills.  Also, for your Objective Statement - don't summarize your experience - write 2-3 sentences on what job you want and why you are the right candidate.  Remember - this can be re-written for different positions that you are applying for as necessary but your Objective should match the advertisement request.

Good luck to you in the future and I hope this helps.

    Manab,

At first, I liked the format of your resume, but I have to admit that after reviewing it, the format gets very confusing.  I like the side column that lists Education and Affiliations (do not put your DOB on a resume) since with 14 years of experience, your resume should highlight your experience more but the other 2 columns make it confusing.  I would suggest making your Experience Section a single column so that it is easier to review - remember, recruiters need the information on a resume to flow or they will move on.  Also, your resume is written in the 3rd person as if it was written by a recruiter - it needs to be written by you.  Furthermore, the green box at the top that summarizes you should be changed to your Objective - what type of position are you looking for and why are you the best candidate.

You have a great deal of information on this resume so the format needs to flow better to be more attractive to future employers.  Good luck to you in the future.

    Mike

    Hello Everyone,

I am submitting my resume for review. I am a graduate student at UCF pursuing Structural and Geotechnical Engineering, and I will be graduating this coming May. I am actively applying for jobs and would like my resume to be reviewed by experts.

I would appreciate feedback on how I can better tailor it toward specialized technical and engineering roles based on my experience and skill set.

Thank you for the opportunity to participate in this workshop.

    Sanidhya,

As a graduating Engineer, your resume should be 1 page so I think you can delete the Academic Projects.  You have sufficient experience and do not need this filler.  Change Professional Summary to Objective and write 2-3 sentences that tells employers what type of job you are looking for and why are you the right candidate for this position.  This statement can be updated as you apply for different positions.  Don't summarize your experience - make them read it.

Overall, you have a solid resume with excellent academic and professional experience so I hope my few suggestions will help you to find a position.  Good luck to you in the future.

Please see attached for my resume. I had difficulty figuring out how to manage my current position as I am part of a rotational program. It is a 2 year program with 4 month stretches in different positions. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Hello,

Thank you for the assistance. Attached is my 'long-form' resume which I typically shorten to 1 page and remove content from based on the job I'm applying for. I'm not actively applying to jobs right now but was interested in exploring opportunities as an engineering manager for companies investing in nuclear infrastructure.

Thank you for the time and assistance!

    Hi everyone,

My name is Levi, I am a final-year Civil Engineering student at the University of Pécs in
Hungary, eager to apply my academic knowledge, technical skills, and international
experience to contribute to engineering projects.

I am currently living in the United States and working on my final thesis which I will have to defend in early June to graduate. I am currently exploring my opportunities for grad school and I am interested to gain experience as an intern or as an entry level civil engineer. My main interests are structural engineering and mainly the designing field is what makes my mind moove.

My love for solving problems is what led me to engineering-I couldn't be happier with that decision.

Hi everyone. Thank you for your time and offering to help. It means alot.

I love coding and engineering both. I have recently been learning about coding and data science and have some internships and past experience in my resume. Now as a civil engineer, I'm looking to use these new skills. Basically anywhere that its useful. I don't really know what kind of role is a good fit. It seems like most companies have completely separated their engineers from their IT and software dept so my unique blend of both skills is not in demand? If anyone knows what kind of role would be a good fit I would appreciate it a lot. I have attached my resume below as well. Hopefully it shows some of my strengths.

I am a member of ASCE via my membership to AEI so the content of my resume might not be what you are expecting to see. My degree is in architectural engineering and I am interesting in continuing my career in electrical engineering in the construction industry.

As a seasoned, mature and typically self-employed professional engineer, I have not changed my approach to a writing a resume in years. It may be that my experience outweighs an outdated resume style. There is plenty of opportunity for improvement. I signed a written offer for employment yesterday but want to submit this for the sake of improvement.  Thank you for your time and attention!
