Hello, this is my second resume review event. My hope is that, since I've addressed the major flaws after the first review, there may be some fine-tuning to do. One thing that came up in the Engineering and STEM job fairs was the number of pages. Being a mid-career candidate makes it difficult to consolidate my experience.

Also, it was helpful to be directed to a multi-disciplinary engineering orientation. Specifically, at Raytheon Intelligence & Space (now defunct), I was in a "specialty engineering" group in Department 22, Data Science & Technologies. So, my experience aligns with AI/ML, digital twins, geoscience applications for GIScience, geospatial science, and the like. Research Scientist roles at Google and AWS have been my favorite target roles to date.

    Paul,

I have reviewed your resume and you have had a lot of experience in your industry. Your resume is professional and includes a lot of key information. I think focusing less on your technical capabilities and focusing more on what you accomplished with those capabilities will improve your resume. I have made more specific comments on your resume, which is attached. Let me know if you have any questions on my comments. Thanks.

I have reviewed your resume, and I am impressed with all of your extracurriculars! Your resume is professional and easy to navigate. I think with some reorganization and removing some content, you can get your resume down to a single page, which I would recommend. Attached are my comments that detail how I think you can achieve this. Let me know if you have any questions on my comments. Thanks.

I am submitting my resume for review. I am an ASCE member and a Civil Engineer currently working in materials and geotechnical inspection in Phoenix.

I'm currently pursuing my Master's in Civil Engineering and would appreciate feedback on how to effectively bridge my "boots-on-the-ground" field inspection experience with my move toward more specialized technical and engineering roles.

Thank you to the coaches for their time and feedback!

    Hi Mojahid,

Your resume is well laid out and has a lot of good information. I commented on a few areas where you could consolidate or remove info to keep it a little more concise. Regarding bridging your on-the-ground experience with your move toward technical/design roles, I think you are showing this already with your emphasis on data, standards, and documentation; but if you wanted to add some relevant coursework to either of your degrees especially your current MS pursuit, that might also help emphasize that transition in focus.

    Best of luck!

    Thanks,

    Katie

    Hi Ariful,

Your resume is off to a good start. The biggest comments I have are to be consistent in formatting and to expand a bit about your specific accomplishments in your experience. I left some suggestions for where you can do that, but it's up to you to showcase your work!

    Best of luck!

    Hi Nischal,

Your resume presents your experience really clearly and has a lot of great detail. My main suggestion is to trim it down a bit, so I left suggestions on where you could optimize your use of space on the page and also suggestions of items that don't need to be included at this stage. If you are still short on space, you could reduce the words in some of  your longer experience bullets.

    Best of luck!

    Thanks,
    Katie

Hi! Thank you for the opportunity to review my resume.

I am a Construction Engineering Technology student seeking a summer internship in heavy civil or commercial construction, ideally in the DFW area. I am particularly interested in project engineering or field engineering roles.

I would appreciate feedback on how to better tailor my resume for construction internships, especially regarding technical skills, formatting, and how to better highlight my coursework and leadership involvement. I am also open to suggestions on how to make my resume more competitive for larger firms.

Thank you in advance for your time and guidance!

    Hi Alexia,

Thank you for submitting your resume! Overall, this is a good resume as a one-page summary of your skills and experience.

A few suggestions on ways you can further improve your resume:

    • Is "rojas" part of your gmail name? If so I would also have that blue and underlined to match the rest of your gmail.
    • For the experience section, can you add more quantitative experience? For example, about how many NEZ Program applications have you filled out as part of your first job listed?
    • This might be more of a personal preference, but if you are still working in the Florist role, I usually write those bullet points in present tense "Plan and execute…"
    • If you want to save space, you can right align "Expected Graduation: May 2027" on the same line as your anticipate degree. Similar can be done for "2026 – Present" on the same line as Member under your professional involvement
    • For the skills section, you could add when you earned the Google certificate?

For how to better tailor for resume for construction internships, I would first find a job posting that you are looking to apply to and then customize your resume to keyword / qualifications in that job description that you meet.  In terms of large firms, perhaps you can add more about your experience working on a team? If you have completed an engineering design project in school with a team, that would be a great thing to add to your resume!

    Hope this helps!

    Sincerely,

    Dani

    Hi Samuel,

Thank you for submitting your resume! Overall, this is a great resume as a one-page summary of your skills and experience.

A few suggestions on ways you can further improve your resume:

    • For the experience section, can you add more quantitative experience? For example, the quantities you completed, was that only for the ~200 acre site or for several other projects during your internship?
    • Rather than listing your soft skill at the bottom of your resume, I would much rather you show me through your leadership role. How were you adaptable in your Senator role? How did your attention to detail win you the Outstanding Student of the year award?
    • For the skills section, you could add what version of the program (i.e. AutoCAD 2020 or Bentley OpenRoads Designer 10.12)

    Hope this helps!

    Sincerely,

    Dani

    Hi Emaduddin,

Thank you for submitting your resume! Overall, this is a great resume as a one-page summary of your skills and experience and congratulations on already passing the PE Exam!

A few suggestions on ways you can further improve your resume:

    • Include the custom text to the URL of your LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/e-ahmad) especially for times when you will be printing this out / scanning it like what typically occurs at in person career fairs. Occasionally, HR does give me a stack of paper resumes to review so it would also help in that case!
    • Would add "in" to MS Civil Engineering in your Professional Summary to match the education line below.
    • For the experience section, can you add more quantitative experience? For example, for your Graduate TA role, how many students did you have in a class at one time?
    • Instead of listing what organizations you are a member of, can you show me more about what you have learned being a member of those organizations? Have you completed in any competitions like for ASCE Student Symposium?
    • For the skills section, you could add what most recent version of the program you are familiar with (i.e. AutoCAD 2020 or Bentley OpenRoads Designer 10.12).
    • For the Extracurricular section, this might read better if you add the role name first and then what you did like "Career Fair Chair – Organized an on-campus…"

    Hope this helps!

    Sincerely,

    Dani

Thank you for submitting your resume! Overall, this is a good resume as a summary of your skills and experience and glad to see you are already signed up to take the FE Exam!

A few suggestions on ways you can further improve your resume:

    • Include the custom text to the URL of your LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/akowuah-adu-jesse/)  especially for times when you will be printing this out / scanning it like what typically occurs at in person career fairs. Occasionally, HR does give me a stack of paper resumes to review so it would also help in that case!
    • Can remove the '." at the end of your objective
    • Add "Anticipated Graduation Date" before May 2026 so it stands out more
    • For your titles like "Professional Experience" I would underline or rewrite in all caps to make those stand out more.
    • For the experience section, can you add more quantitative experience? For example, approximately how many horizontal alignments have you laid out? Any complexities like a compound curve that you can mention to help me better understand your experience?
    • For the skills section, you could add what most recent version of the program you are familiar with (i.e. AutoCAD 2020 or Bentley OpenRoads Designer 10.12).
    • For the Leadership section, I would much rather you show me what you have done in your role as Vice President rather than listed you are a member of ASCE and NSBE (though I am happy to see you are a member of both)
    • Typically as an early career, I would prefer you to summarize your experience to date into a single page. With that in mind, I suggest the additional edits:
      • Change the line spacing to single spacing rather than 1,5 or double
      • Condense your software & tools section into two lines or so (Software: XXXXXX NEW LINE Tools: XXXXXX). You could even list the Standards right under there the same way.

    Hope this helps!

    Sincerely,

    Dani

    Hi Danielle,

Thank you for the thoughtful feedback. I appreciate you pointing out areas where I can strengthen the resume, particularly adding more quantified experience and clarifying software versions. I'll revise it accordingly and work toward a more concise one-page format.

I'm grateful for your time and insight.

    Best,
    Jesse

Hello! Thank you the opportunity to have my resume reviewed. I am recent graduate from the University of California - Davis and have been looking to gain experience in the civil engineering industry in order to progress my career. During college, I wasn't able to get an internship so I have very little experience in terms of job experience. However, I do have experience in projects I did during college. I look forward to hearing your recommendations and tips on what to change or add in my resume.

Thank you so much for your time!

    Hi Pratiyush,

Thank you for submitting your resume! Overall, this is a good resume as a summary of your skills and experience and glad to see you are already signed up to take the FE Exam!

A few suggestions on ways you can further improve your resume:

    • Remove "to make a difference" from your objective to make it more concise.
    • Can you align "Monterrey, Mexico" under the name of the study abroad on the left rather than the right where you have the dates you were there?
    • For the skills section, you could add what most recent version of the program you are familiar with (i.e. AutoCAD 2020 or Bentley OpenRoads Designer 10.12).
    • I love to see presentation experience whenever possible – for your Senior Design Capstone, did you happen to have to present to professors and/or peers at the end?
    • Add some line space between the last line of your PROJECTS section and the beginning of the WORK EXPERIENCE section like between previous sections
    • Love seeing your Math Tutor experience! Can you add more quantitative experience like you did above? For example, was it only 1:1 tutoring or how many students were you tutoring in a group setting at one time?

    Hope this helps!

    Sincerely,

    Dani

    Hello Workshop Team,

I am a recent graduate seeking an entry-level civil engineering or BIM/VDC position. I have struggled to wade through all the conflicting resume advice, and I hope to come away from this workshop with a better understanding of industry standards. I'd appreciate a thorough assessment along with any suggestions for improvement. I am aware of two occasions on which a previous version of my application was rejected due to automatic filters, and I hope that the current iteration has minimized that risk. I also cannot seem to find the attached ASCE Resume Rubric, but I did find one from the Spring 2025 workshop and would like confirmation that it is the most recent version.  Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to your feedback.

Stephanie, someone else on our team will be reviewing your resume for specific comments/suggestions, but I can confirm that I have not made updates to the rubric since last year.

You're so right that there are a lot of conflicting opinions on resumes, and that also means that different recruiters may be looking for different things. While they may disagree on some points, I think a clean resume goes a long way even if it isn't necessarily how they would write their own resume.

Below are my general considerations for resumes without looking through yours specifically:

I think the best thing you can do is try to put yourself in the shoes of the person who will be looking at your resume. If you know it will go to a computer filter first, try to really tailor it to contain the key words from the job posting that pertain to your qualifications and experiences. If you are going to a career fair or cold-emailing your resume to a company, a clear and brief objective statement can be very helpful to make sure the resume ultimately ends up in the correct department's hands. No matter the intended recipient (electronic or human), a format with clear organizational structure with labels will help the reviewer find the information they are scanning for at a glance.

I like to view resumes like a movie trailer. You need it to make your target audience want to buy a ticket (offer an interview) without giving away the whole plot (giving so much information that it is overwhelming to look through).

    Hi Stephanie,

Thank you for submitting your resume! Overall, this is a good resume as a summary of your skills and experience and glad to see you are prepared to take the FE Exam! Heidi had some great advice below and clarified regarding the ASCE Resume Rubric, so I will focus on the other parts of your questions and resume.

A few suggestions on ways you can further improve your resume:

    • Glad to see both ASCE and SWE listed under professional development! Instead of including "detail oriented, proactive, adaptable: in your professional summary, can you show me how you use those soft skills through your experience in those two professional societies?
    • I would center the middle column of your Core Competencies to make the spacing more consistent between column s1 and 2 and columns 2 and 3.
    • For the experience section, can you add more quantitative experience? For example, about how many buildings have you run clash detection on? Are they 2 story buildings or 25 stories?
    • For the skills section, you could add what most recent version of the program you are familiar with (i.e. AutoCAD 2020 or Bentley OpenRoads Designer 10.12).
    • Similar to the professional development section, I would love you to highlight your adaptability and detail oriented soft skills through your previous work experience section
    • Typically, as an early career, I would prefer you to summarize your experience to date into a single page. With that in mind, I suggest the additional edits:
      • Move your name and contact information higher up on the page in the header to give your more room
      • Shorten your Professional Summary by removing the soft skills listed
      • Shorten the sections in the experience that are Course Work only and focus on keeping the ones with leadership experience or other skills you want to highlight

I did see this file was named as your generic resume, so maybe you already summarized this down to one page based on the specific job you are applying to!

    Hope this helps!

    Sincerely,

    Dani

    Danielle,

Thank you for your feedback! In particular, I appreciate the tips on how to 'sell' one's self as it is something I struggle with. I do summarize differently based on the job, but it occasionally overflows and I will attempt to edit this down further.

Below are my comments/suggestions for your resume:

    • If you don't want to put your street address, you don't have to include that. Most job correspondence is electronic now. If you are wanting to stay in the same geographic area or let employers know you are local, you could leave the city and state.
    • I discourage people from adding a  "soft skills" section to their resumes since they are often similar skills listed that anyone (whether or not they have that skill) can add to a resume. I find that they take up room on your resume without telling the reviewer anything that they necessarily believe just by being told. I think those skills are better demonstrated through your work experience descriptions and in an interview. For example, collaboration can be demonstrated by describing your role in a group project or on a team. Consider how you can show those skills in the other sections of your resume.
    • I would remove the bold formatting from "real-world traffic data collection and interpretation" since it is the only non-title bolded text.
    • One last minor comment: in your file name, take off the last "e" in resume

Overall, I think your format is clear and easy to navigate. Best of luck as you continue through your M.S. education!

Below are my comments/suggestions for your resume:

    • Decrease your font sizes and spacing so that everything fits on one side of a standard sheet of paper even after making the following changes
    • You don't have to put your mailing address if you don't want to. You can leave the city/state if you want to stay in that area
    • For your objective statement, you might add more specifics. For example, "transportation" or "land development" or whatever area(s) of focus you are interested in. You can also edit this line for specific positions if you are sending it to a specific company instead of taking to a career fair or uploading to a job search website
    • I would add your expected graduation date instead of "Fall 2021 - Present"
    • You do not have to add your GPA if you don't want to. A recruiter can ask if it is something they require as part of the application process.
    • Where you've worked isn't as important as what you did there. Give bullet point descriptions starting with verbs for your work. You can also combine items. For example, the Michigan DOT can be one section with both date ranges.
    • Don't use general terms like "Leadership" -- anyone can say that. It carries a lot more weight to show than to just claim it as an attribute. This can be demonstrated in your bullet points under your experience and your organizations. It can then be reinforced in an interview.
    • I would change your skills section to just be the technology related items. Be more specific with "CAD Programs" -- was it GeoPAK, OpenRoads, Civil 3D, etc.

In general, try to put yourself in the shoes of a resume recipient at a company. Do they know which specific department to give your resume to? Do they know when you will graduate? What can they tell about your specific experience that sets you apart from other candidates? Does the content of your resume give them the evidence that you are a detail-oriented leader who will make a great member of the team based on what you have shown them in the resume?

    Hi,

I am a student at Virginia Tech studying Smart and Sustainable Cities with a minor in Green Engineering. I am graduating this May and looking for an entry-level position. I am particularly interested in Green Building Consulting (i.e., working with sustainability frameworks such as LEED, ENVISION, and Living Building Challenge, etc.). I would highly appreciate any kind of feedback on my resume.

Below are my comments/suggestions for your resume:

    • Since you are graduating soon, I would include a personal email address in addition to your school address so they can contact you after you stop using your school email. (Be sure it is a professional email address, preferably based on your name, and not something like soccerkidd15@...)
    • I would add an objective line at the top (below your name and contact information) that is very simple such as "Seeking full-time, entry-level position related to Green Building and sustainability frameworks." This line can be tailored to specific jobs in situations where you are applying to a specific company/role
    • I would add another " | " between Presidential Scholar and Graduation
    • Would everyone know what T&E reports are in your interest area? If not, I would spell it out under your Dewberry experience

Overall a very impressive resume in both content and format. Best of luck as you wrap up your last semester!

Below are my comments/suggestions for your resume:

    • I would flip your name and contact information so your name is at the top, and you can decrease the font some on your name if you need more room.
    • You can find opinions on both sides of this, but I personally do not think professional summaries add any value to an engineering resume. They are harder to skim and are often a repeat of the information you could/should include elsewhere. (In my opinion, your whole resume is your professional summary.) When I'm looking through resumes, especially at career fairs, I prefer an Objective Statement that is short and sweet. Something like "Civil engineering senior seeking Summer 2026 internship related to water or wastewater treatment." Something that helps the recipient know right away which position you are considering can increase the chances that it ends up in the right person's hands back at the office.
    • I would write out the month instead of using the ##/ format since that is easier to skim than the numbers running together
    • Try to come up with more specific bullet points under your internship job experience. What you have now is so vague that it could apply to almost any engineering internship. What did you do that might trigger a good interview conversation? Was there a specific interesting project you contributed to? What could make you more memorable than any other candidate with an engineering internship? (Your golf course descriptions look good already)
    • At this stage in your education, I would take off the "relevant coursework" section. As a student about to graduate from an ABET accredited Civil Engineering program, the recruiters will know in general what coursework you should have done already.
    • An undergraduate resume should fit on just the front side of one standard sheet of paper with font at a legible size.
    • Don't give your high school education information anymore. Now that you have nearly all of college under your belt, you don't need it. You can also take off the dual enrollment section. Removing those will give you some space back.
    • Since you have good work experience, I would reduce your volunteering section to more of a list with the names and dates. Treat it as a teaser for the interview.
    • Take off your high school capstone project for the same reason we're removing the HS education contents.
    • I don't, and I think many others don't, just take someone at their word on "soft" skills. Anyone can pull those words off the internet and put them there. Instead of listing those skills there, think about how you can incorporate examples of those skills into your work experience.
    • Since you already list the software in your education section, you can either change the "Skills" section to a "Software Skills" section and take it out of education or leave it in education and delete the "skills" section altogether.

In general, I think you have a great starting place to turn this from an good resume into a great resume.

Try to put yourself in the shoes of someone at a career fair who will talk to dozens or hundreds of students. Can they quickly skim your whole resume on one page? Can they tell at a glance what you're wanting to do? What will make your resume content memorable?

Think of your resume as the movie trailer for your interview. You need them to be interested enough in you to buy a ticket, but you don't have to give them every little detail upfront.

Below are my comments/suggestions on your resume:

    • Above your education section, I would add an OBJECTIVE section header with a line about what you are seeking. For example, "Civil Engineering postgraduate student seeking structural engineering internship for Summer 2026." This will help a recruiter get your resume connected to the right contact at the office.
    • If you need to make room to add the objective statement without decreasing your font size, I think you could remove the "|" and the information behind it from your academic projects section. (that would make the first project take up one less line). You could also change your technical skills section to combine BIM, Drafting, and Coding into one line if you needed more space. (They are find as-is if you can fit the objective statement.)

Overall an impressive resume. I like the bolded text making it easier to skim for specific experience. The quantifiable data in the descriptions also give interviewers the opportunity to have specific questions in mind.

Below are my comments/suggestions for your resume:

    • I would move the vertical "line" between the titles and the content to the left so they look more connected together
    • You do not have to include your physical address in your resume
    • Since you have the room at this stage of your schooling, I would move the titles from your experience section to a new line rather than up with the employer
    • I would put bullet points under your experience and start each line with a verb. For example, "Assisted aquarium, engineers with ____ testing"
    • I would also convert your achievements section to bullet points so they are easier to skim through than a paragraph format
    • Under education, add a section for your college (above the HS info) that includes the school, major, and expected graduation date. (Once you finish your sophomore year, I would remove the high school info since by that time you should have more than enough post-high school content to fill out your resume.)
    • I would take off "etc." from your interests list

Best of luck as you continue your college journey!

Below are my comments/suggestions on your resume:

    • I would change your "summary" to an "objective" and make it short and sweet. Something like "Civil Engineering PhD candidate seeking full-time employment with a focus in pavement or Geotechnical Engineering"
    • Think about what an employer at a company would want to see first. I would probably reorder the sections of your resume so that the professional service items appear before the selected publications and selected graduate courses.
    • I would switch your OSU email address to a personal email so that you don't lose contact with anyone when that email address is no longer available to you.

Overall it looks like you have some great experience. I recommend trying to put yourself in the shoes of a corporate recruiter instead of the typical academic mindset to see if there are any other changes you would make that may be helpful to that reviewer.

Best of luck as you wrap up your PhD studies, and Go Pokes!

    Hi Gabriel,

I get the impression from your resume (even if I didn't read your post) that you are interested in the structural realm of civil engineering. It might be good to find a way to state that in your Summary at the top, or otherwise in each position you apply to, find a way to write about how your background is a good fit.

My one nitpick might be that your line about "Core skills: Problem Solving, Critical Thinking, Collaboration" is one that is better shown than written.

In terms of organization, your resume is clear and easy to read and the bullets you have listed are already written in such a way that I think you are presenting your experiences well. Good luck to you.

    Hi Muhammad,

This is a clean resume that is easy to follow. Your resume being two pages may or may not be a turn off to some companies looking to hire an entry-level engineer. I do not know for certain if that is an outdated concern in the world of digital resumes, but if you wanted to pay it safe, it might be beneficial to see what you can do about changing your formatting to reduce the amount of white space between sections, and see how much of your experience you can fit solely on one page. Good luck.

    Hi Austin,

The sentences under Summary are a good start but you finish with a sentence fragment. Consider adjusting to something like "Civil Engineering student focused on Geotechnical and Water Resources Engineering, bringing applied experience as a Project Engineering Intern in project coordination, technical design development, and multidisciplinary collaboration."

In terms of organization, your resume is clear and easy to read and the bullets you have listed are already written in such a way that I think you are presenting your experiences well.

    Hi Mohammad,

Consider adding a Summary section to the top of your resume to briefly explain who you are, what you can do, and how it applies to each specific job you apply to.

Your resume format is easy to follow and does a good job of showcasing your experience.

My one nitpick is that many of your sentences are a little too wordy and are trying to do too much.

Take the following example from your resume. Instead of:

Spearheaded the management of roadworks projects valued at 24 million while using project management tools such as P6 Primavera and Blue Beam that resulted in a 15% increase in project efficiency and a notable 10% reduction in material wastage.

    Try:

Led $24M roadworks projects, improving efficiency by 15% and reducing material waste by 10% using Primavera P6 and Bluebeam.

I believe making these types of changes to the rest of your resume will make your experience more readable and sound more professionally technical.

    Best of luck.

    Hi Afzal,

I really like this resume. It is well organized and each bullet is clear. I honestly have no major critiques. If I were to nitpick anything at all, I don't think there is much value in the line for "Soft Skills". Those are things better described in other areas of your resume, which you have already done. Good job.

Your resume is well organized. I don't think there is much value in the line for "Soft Skills". Those are things better described in other areas of your resume.

I would also move your Experience section to the top of your resume, as this is your most important section. Beyond that, I have no major critiques. Good luck.

    Daniel,

You have an excellent resume with very solid experience.  In reading through your resume several times, I think the only critique I can provide is to change "Summary" to "Objective" and re-write this paragraph.  You should start this paragraph with more about "what are you looking for" and less about your experience because your experience writeups below provide an excellent picture of your experience. Also, with your years of experience, are you "actively pursuing your PE" - if so, weave that into your Objective statement - depending on the employers you will be applying to, licensed Engineers and Engineers seeking their license are often more attractive hires.

Good luck to you in the future and I hope these suggestions help you.

    Parisa,

Solid resume with a great deal of information but I think you need to refine the information.  My suggestions would be as follows:

    • Reformat top of resume to include a title block - make your name bigger - you want to be noticed.
    • Replace professional summary with Objective and make the objective specific to the job you are applying to.  I read your professional summary and I understand your experience but I did not understand where you are looking to go in your career - public? private? academic? - Don't summarize your experience - make the employers want to read it.  Your objective should be 2-3 sentences max.
    • Under Technical Skills and Key Strengths - I think you can delete Key Strengths and remove the first paragraph - your professional and educational experience already demonstrates you are a highly driven, motivated individual - your resume being 3 pages can be lengthy so try to minimize where possible.
    • In your Education Section - re-format - I had to read thoroughly to see your colleges - think about either re-formatting or bolding key points in certain sections to make your resumes easier for employers to read through.

Good luck to you in the future and I hope these suggestions help you.

Thank you to everyone who has work to make this available for members at no cost. This type of feedback from a seasoned professional is invaluable. I am very interested in finding a summer position that will allow me to engage in design while still being in the field, such as a geotechnical internship. Any advice on gearing my resume towards that kind of job would be greatly appreciated. Of course, any other constructive criticism is invited as well.

    Thank you for your time!

    Jonathan,

Your resume needs an Objective Statement - what type of position are you applying to? In your experience, you have roadway and wastewater experience - which avenue in Civil Engineering do you want to pursue? Also, this Objective statement can be fluid - it should be amended to match the position you are applying to.  I think you can edit and adjust margins to fit it in. Under certifications and awards, delete "recognized" and just include date to present.  Also, spell out some of the abbreviated words like UCF and IB.  I also think you should expand the bullets on your current Roadway experience even if you have to decrease some of the bullets in your school experience.  Practical experience outweighs all other in the resume.

Overall, solid resume with some of the suggested adjustments.  Good luck to you in the future.

    Regina,

Your resume needs some work - you have a decent framework, but you need more substance.   You need to start with an Objective Statement - what are you looking for, including the ability to relocate from NJ to FL.  Then, you need to reformat - information on resumes goes from high importance to lower importance.  With your years of service, after the Objective statement, your work experience should be next - for your current experience, expand on the type of projects that you have worked on - be more descriptive.  You should do the same for your other work experiences.  Your Education should come next - same comment - expand on your major/minor, etc.  Skills should come last and some of your skills should include some items from your summary section.

As I said, you have a decent foundation, but you need to expand your writing in all categories.  Good luck to you in the future.

    Mike

    Mostakimul,

You have a solid resume - I would just recommend changing the order of certain items.  I believe the order should be Objective (not Professional Summary), Education, Work Experience, Engineering Organization Technical Involvement, Certifications and then combine Technical and Additional Skills into Skills.  Also, for your Objective Statement - don't summarize your experience - write 2-3 sentences on what job you want and why you are the right candidate.  Remember - this can be re-written for different positions that you are applying for as necessary but your Objective should match the advertisement request.

Good luck to you in the future and I hope this helps.

    Manab,

At first, I liked the format of your resume, but I have to admit that after reviewing it, the format gets very confusing.  I like the side column that lists Education and Affiliations (do not put your DOB on a resume) since with 14 years of experience, your resume should highlight your experience more but the other 2 columns make it confusing.  I would suggest making your Experience Section a single column so that it is easier to review - remember, recruiters need the information on a resume to flow or they will move on.  Also, your resume is written in the 3rd person as if it was written by a recruiter - it needs to be written by you.  Furthermore, the green box at the top that summarizes you should be changed to your Objective - what type of position are you looking for and why are you the best candidate.

You have a great deal of information on this resume so the format needs to flow better to be more attractive to future employers.  Good luck to you in the future.

    Mike

    Sanidhya,

As a graduating Engineer, your resume should be 1 page so I think you can delete the Academic Projects.  You have sufficient experience and do not need this filler.  Change Professional Summary to Objective and write 2-3 sentences that tells employers what type of job you are looking for and why are you the right candidate for this position.  This statement can be updated as you apply for different positions.  Don't summarize your experience - make them read it.

Overall, you have a solid resume with excellent academic and professional experience so I hope my few suggestions will help you to find a position.  Good luck to you in the future.

These are not part of the university curriculum, but rather competitions I participate in regularly, including events at the state level (such as against ODU and Virginia Tech) and at the national/international level (including Georgia Tech and the University of British Columbia). I've found these projects to be highly relevant to my interests in the water and wastewater industry.

I completely understand the preference for a one-page resume. Given the number of competitions and applied projects I've been involved in, I found it challenging to remove them entirely, especially since they directly align with the roles I'm pursuing. Additionally, with many applications now being submitted online, I hoped the slight increase in length would be acceptable if the content adds value.

Thank you again for your time and for the thoughtful feedback. I truly appreciate it.

    Thanks,

    Jack Tigani

    Kyra,

I have reviewed your resume and you have a very strong starting point! Your resume is professional, easy to navigate, contains key information, and is a single page. My biggest comment would be to add an Objective or Summary statement to your resume to indicate what type of job you are looking for. Attached are my minor comments on how I feel your resume can be improved. Let me know if you have any questions on my comments. Good work!

    Hello Tirza,

I'm a current civil engineering transfer student and I'm a first generation engineer. I just want my resume to be the best version of myself . So I truly appreciate the guidance on my current resume. I went to the career fair on campus 2 weeks ago and I got some amazing feedback on it. Well on how to tune it up better but haven't been able to land an internship and I heard it all starts with the resume.

    sincerely,

Let me know if you have any questions on my comments. Great job!

I graduate in May with my A.S. in Construction and Environmental Technology. I am looking for a job as a CAD drafter. I've been applying for jobs for months now and have managed to only get one interview. For obvious reasons I took out my address, phone number and name and phone of my references.
    Thank you.

    Hi, Avishek.

Thank you for sharing your resume and my apologies for my tardy response.

You have a good start to your resume. Please see attached file for my suggestions. In general:

    • Consistent formatting so as not to distract from the content. You want the reader to focus on content, not format. The person looking at your resume will start with a quick scan. You want your accomplishments to jump out so they will want to take a second look.

    • Your bullet points should emphasize your accomplishments. It is not enough to talk about generalities.

    Best Regards,

    Lily

Thank you for sharing your resume and my apologies for my tardy response.

You have a good start to your resume. Please see attached file for my suggestions. In general:

    • Focus the content to the time period you've been in college, including the 2-year degree.

    • Include college course work relevant to the type of internship you seek.

    • Include any volunteer experience that demonstrates you people and/or leadership skills.

    Hi, Shubham.

Thank you for sharing your resume and my apologies for my tardy response.

You have a good start to your resume. Please see attached file for my suggestions. In general:

    • I have clarifying questions regarding some of your bullet points. These items need context. A potential employer will take an initial, first glance of all the resumes they've received. You want to capture their attention so they will take a second look. So that first impression is very important. If the information is unclear, they will likely just move on. Be clear, succinct and to the point.

    • Be consistent with your formatting. I would recommend using common formats (e.g., resume headings and order, paper and presentation citations, etc.).

    Best Regards,

    Lily

    Hi, Joseph.

Thank you for sharing your resume and my apologies for my tardy response.

You have a great start to your resume. Please see attached file for my suggestions. In summary, my suggestions are around:

    • Re-ordering the content. I suggest organizing the headings in the following order:  personal information, objective, education, certification/licensure, experience, skills, organizations. ASCE recommends this order. But it is also an order of contents used universally. It is good to align with what recruiters are expecting to see - otherwise, they might not find what they are looking for.

    • Use verb tense to indicate what you used to do (by using past tense) versus what you are doing now (by using current tense). For example, my resume says "Developed Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans" versus "Leading Division Safety Committee".

    Best regards,

    Lily

    Hi, Presan.

Thank you for sharing your resume and my apologies for my tardy response.

You have a good start to your resume. Please see attached file for my suggestions. In general:

    • There is no need to include your high school information now that you are in your second year of college.

    • Highlight your accomplishments in your experiences. Volunteer experience where you led or organized something is an example.

    • I liked how you highlighted your people skills with your job answering calls. This is important and relevant so feel free to add this type of experience even if it's volunteer.

    Best Regards,

    Lily

    Hello,

Thank you for the assistance. Attached is my 'long-form' resume which I typically shorten to 1 page and remove content from based on the job I'm applying for. I'm not actively applying to jobs right now but was interested in exploring opportunities as an engineering manager for companies investing in nuclear infrastructure.

    Hi everyone,

My name is Levi, I am a final-year Civil Engineering student at the University of Pécs in
Hungary, eager to apply my academic knowledge, technical skills, and international
experience to contribute to engineering projects.

I am currently living in the United States and working on my final thesis which I will have to defend in early June to graduate. I am currently exploring my opportunities for grad school and I am interested to gain experience as an intern or as an entry level civil engineer. My main interests are structural engineering and mainly the designing field is what makes my mind moove.

My love for solving problems is what led me to engineering-I couldn't be happier with that decision.

    Daren,

For your 20+ years of experience and military experience, I think your resume needs re-formatting.  As a Senior Level hire, your experience will weigh heavily on an employer's interest versus your education so that needs to move down the resume.  I am also not a fan of summaries - instead, I think you need an Objective statement st the top of your resume - your mention in your post that you are in a transition - in the Objective statement is where you explain that in 2-3 sentences and let potential employers know what are you looking for and why you are the right candidate. After the Objective, I would lead with your experience.  Expand on the Region 4 Governor duties - I think your current explanation is too generic and does not do this position justice.  Under Senior Specialist, Engineering is spelled wrong - make sure you spell check the entire document.  Also, get into more specifics about what you did - I believe your earlier experiences are more elaborate.  You also have volunteer work mixed in with work experiences.  I think for your dedication and experience level, it works but make it less confusing or easier to understand - use bold or different text to highlight this.   I would say your entire resume is to monochromatic - use bold, underline italicize etc. to highlight starts of new section and different achievements.  Also, widen the margins, your resume is unnecessarily too lengthy because a single description spans 3 lines.

Otherwise, your experience and military service make you a highly qualified candidate, but I think re-formatting of your resume is necessary to make you stand out. Good luck to you in the future.

    Mike

    Sydney,

Overall, you have a solid resume with a good working format.  My only suggestions would be to increase your bullets on your work experience - be more specific, mention magnitude of projects, size of contributing staff, etc.  Currently, your descriptions are very generic - punch them up to garner the attention of future employers.  You can reformat the Summer Internship descriptions into single lines to make room for more substance in your work experience because that is where potential employers will look based on your years in the industry.

I hope this helps and good luck to you in the future.

    Ujjwal,

Excellent resume - well formatted and very well written description of your work experience.  Your only challenge will be that my advice is to include an Objective statement in your tightly packed format.  The Objective statement should be 2-3 sentences telling future employers what type of position you are looking for and why you are the best candidate for this position (similar to your statement in this post).

Overall, you have an excellent resume with a solid format.  Good luck to you in the future.

    Kaylan,

I like the framework of your resume but I think it needs some re-formatting.  Change Professional Summary to Objective Statement - 2-3 sentences explaining to a future employer what type of position and company you are looking for and why you are the right candidate for their advertisement.  Move the Technical Skills to the bottom.  My issue with a Professional Summary is that by providing it, you have now given a recruiter the easy way out and they may not review the rest of your resume - you want them to give you the attention you deserve.  In your Experience section, I am not a fan of accomplishments as they are more duties.  I would delete accomplishments - I like the summary statement before the bullets but re-word them to move right into the bullets more seamlessly.  The bullets are well written.

Overall, you have a solid resume and I hope my suggestions are helpful.

    Mike

    Valentina,

    Below are my comments/suggestions

    • Always submit your resumes in PDF format so that you know your formatting isn't changed when someone opens it
    • I would only show the technical skills that are relevant to the job you are seeking. For example, "food safety manager" likely won't matter for an engineering internship
    • For your Starbucks experience, see if there is a way to make some of what is listed more specific to your contributions. (Someone who is not helpful could have been part of an overall "strong team" -- I'm not saying you weren't helpful, but if you can change the wording a little to further highlight your role on the team, that may be beneficial to a recruiter.)
    • capitalize the "V" on the second bullet point under your church volunteering
    • When you get ready to apply for positions, adding a brief objective statement before your education section can be helpful. Something as simple as "Junior Civil Engineering student seeking summer 2027 internship in transportation or land development"

Overall an easy to read format. Best of luck as you continue your studies!

    Arip,

    Below are my comments/suggestions:

    • You do not have to put your full address if you don't want to. If you want to stay local to where you are, you can leave the city and state.
    • I do not recommend summaries. A one page resume is already a summary, and the rest of the resume format is easier for a recruiter/employer to skim. Replace it with and "OBJECTIVE STATEMENT" header with a simple explanation of what you're looking for. For example, mine would have said something like "Civil Engineering student seeking summer 2024 internship"
    • I like how you have your skills section organized since you have a variety of categories of skills, and a future employer may be looking for a specific skill.

Overall a nice resume. Best of luck as you wrap up your doctoral studies!

As a seasoned, mature and typically self-employed professional engineer, I have not changed my approach to a writing a resume in years. It may be that my experience outweighs an outdated resume style. There is plenty of opportunity for improvement. I signed a written offer for employment yesterday but want to submit this for the sake of improvement.  Thank you for your time and attention!

    James,

I agree - your resume reflects an older style of resume that no longer fits with your years of service.  Experience comes before Education once you have been in the industry for 5-10 years.  I would recommend an Objective Statement versus a Professional Summary - 2-3 sentences to state the position you are looking for and why you are the right candidate for the advertisement to potential employers.  I found your Professional Summary to be too long (and too small - use a bigger font) and I think lazy recruiters might not move past this summary and review the heart of your resume which is your years of experience.  Your experience write-ups are impressive and well written.  I think if you were to reformat your resume, for the years of experience and licenses you hold, the first page could be a 2-column resume, a narrow column on the left that shows your education and licenses and then the larger right column for your experiences.  This gives future employers a quicker look at all that you bring to the table.

I hope these suggestions help and best of luck to you in the future.

    Mike

Below are my comments/suggestions. If you are looking for work in your local area, you might check with a professional in your region before making the changes in case there are difference in expectations in your local industry.

    • I tend to not put much value on overviews since (especially with AI becoming more popular), anyone can say something there that sounds impressive. I prefer an objective statement that lets them know why you are handing out or submitting your resume. For example, I might put something for myself like "Civil Engineer with over 10 years of site design experience seeking fulltime employment in a technical training and project management role."
    • Instead of having such a long list of technical skills and quantities, I would rather see bullet points demonstrating those skills under your experience section. For example, if you are performing estimates and take-offs at your job, list it there instead. I would not include things like "leadership and management" under skills for the same reason I discourage the use of an overview at the top. Those are better described in an interview through questions responses than just claimed on a resume.
    • I would give dates for your certifications
    • Typically someone at your experience level should have a single page resume (one sided). I would suggest you delete the skills and competencies section, delete the honors and awards section, combine the "organizational skills and affiliations" and "networks and memberships" into one section called something like "Clubs and Professional Organizations"(Use the formatting from "Networks and Membership" with the positions listed in gray italics after the organization name in the list on the same line.)

    Best of luck!

    Gabriela,

    Below are my comments/suggestions:

    • you might look at right-aligning the dates in your education and experience so they jump off the page a bit more than when they are close to the other text
    • under your experience bullet points, I would start with the verb instead of who you were under. For example, "Assisted civil project engineers in preparing"
    • I would change the last heading to say "Software and Language Skills"

Overall a very nice starting-point resume!

    Dear ASCE team,

Hello, this is my first time participating in the resume workshop. I am a first year student concluding my spring semester at Howard University. I am currently pursuing an internship for the summer. I'm looking to land internship opportunities in the area of sustainable design. I would appreciate any advice on how I can build my resume with any online certifications or credentials that might help me land these internships.

Thank you for your time and support.

    sincerely, Nathaniel Dates

    Nathaniel,

    Below are my comments/suggestions:

    • I discourage summaries since they all start to sound the same and, frankly, anyone can say they have strong leadership experience even if they don't. Those qualities should be "shown" not "told" in the rest of the resume. Replace it with an objective that clearly and simply says what you want. "Civil Engineering student seeking summer 2026 internship experience in sustainable infrastructure"
    • Format your experience more like your education section
    • Change your semester at sea to "Participated" since it has ended
    • Don't list "soft" skills - anyone can grab a list like that off the internet. Since Microsoft is assumed as a skill for all students these days, just take off the skills section for now until you have some other software under your belt. Consider how you might add some more details under each of your experience section items that could show those skills instead of just claiming to have them.
    • Add dates to the rest of your extracurricular activities like you did the first line

Regarding what you can do to fill out your resume:

    • Consider software certifications relevant to your field of interest
    • Volunteer work is a great way to grow your "soft" skills and have a clear place to describe your contributions in a resume

    Razan,

    Below are my suggestions:

    • I can see a computer potentially having trouble reading your skills since they run together a bit visually
    • I would take off your scholarship from your achievements now that you are entering the workforce. That should give you some room to adjust some formatting elsewhere
    • A question for you: would someone at a career fair know who to pass your resume to? If you aren't submitting your resume to a portal that is specific to one opening, an objective statement helps them know why they are getting your resume.
    • Resumes can be tailored to a specific role. If the job description mentions a specific technical skill they are seeking (and you have it) be sure it is phrased similarly in your resume to help a computer filter find it as a match.

Best of luck as you take this next step in your career!

    Hi Hyeon Jung Kim,

I believe you already have an extremely strong resume. Your format is easy to follow. Your summary is brief but also comprehensive. Your bulleted list of experience is technically accurate while not too detailed and also not filled with non-technical buzzwords. I do not have any suggestions for how you could make this better. Excellent work.

    Hello Soo Bin Chun,

I also work in the field of water resources and I believe you have a very strong resume. Your summary is strong, and your format is clear and easy to follow. I think you have a very high-quality resume already.

One small suggestion – in " Interpreted field data interpretation and site assessments to inform engineering design and planning." I believe the word "interpretation" is redundant to the first word in the bullet, as I understand your sentence.

A final reminder – if you are applying somewhere that is not DOT or municipal, remember to adjust the final sentence of your Summary section at the top accordingly.

    Good luck!

    Soo Bin,

In reading through your resume, you need to reformat it.  Your resume should start - top to bottom - with the most important items.  As a new Engineer to the workforce, remove the summary and change to an Objective Statement - what type of position are you looking for - you have it in the Professional Summary, but it needs to be in the forefront of your resume.  Specifically, since you will be obtaining a PhD which will make employers wonder if you are going private, public or academia in your future - your objective statement will resolve this question.  Next sections are Education, Professional Experience and Publications (I would change from Selected Papers).  These areas are well written and show your dedication and professionalism.  Normally, newly graduated engineers are told to keep their resume to 1 page but based on your academic career, I believe your resume warrants the 2nd page to fully describe your attributes.  I would move the Technical Skills section below publications.

You have excellent academic and professional experience and I think the re-formatting will help to highlight that.  Good luck to you in the future.

    Mike

    Hi Lalit,

I do not have any major critiques of your resume. I believe the format is clear and the bullets you present are technically clear without embellishing buzzwords.

My one small nitpick is that I do not think it is necessary to highlight the word "design" in blue in your Professional Summary.

    Best of luck.

    Hi Victor,

I think your current resume is a very good foundation. Given that you have not graduated yet, I understand why you would not have a lot of work experience to add to your resume.

However, if its possible, I would encourage you to think if there are additional bullets you could add to your work experience section. Are there other aspects of your listed jobs that you could elaborate on? Are there academic projects you could list elsewhere to highlight either lab or experience with the software you listed?

Your name section currently takes up about 20% of the page on your page. I think it might be possible to add your Profile and Contact sections to that section in gray at the top, and allow for more space to elaborate on some of the items described above. Try to put yourself in the shoes of the employers who are looking for applicants, and think about what you would want to know if you were the one making a hire.

    Best of luck.

    Hi Narayan,

I have reviewed your resume and since you are a PhD. Candidate, I believe there is likely more information you could present about yourself to strengthen your resume.

Based on what you have listed at present, it seems like you are more interested in remaining in academia than entering into industry when you graduate. If that is not the case, I would suggest beginning your resume with a Summary section that briefly describes your journey to date, what you have learned along the way, and what you have to offer to the places you wish to go next.

I like that you were able to succinctly summarize your work as a graduate student at UDel, and also your time working as a Senior Engineer into one bullet each. However, I believe that you likely have a lot more experience in each of these places that is more valuable to showcase than your list of scholarships and grants. Consider giving that space over to bullets of tangible skills, projects, or actions you've been involved with that display what you know how to do.

    Best of luck.

    Tarun,

As a relatively new Engineer in the industry, your Education should come before your Experience in the resume.  Also, your resume needs to start with an Objective statement - 2-3 sentences on what position are you looking for and why you are the right candidate for this position.  To fit the Objective statement, you can delete the coursework under your Master's degree - not needed on the resume and can be discussed during an interview.  Your experience area is well written.  If you need more room for formatting, I would decrease the project descriptions.  Make your Objective, Education and Experience the focal points of your resume.

I hope these suggestions assist you in the future and good luck.

I believe you have a very strong resume with a format that is easy to follow. Since your resume is already 2 pages, you may want to think about adding a Summary section at the top. Here, you can describe who you are in a way that is greater than the sum of each of the parts of your resume listed below.
