CECS Lunch & Learn: Revisiting the northern coast of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

When:  Nov 29, 2023 from 12:00 PM to 01:00 PM (ET)
Associated with  COPRI Public Events

Brought to you by the COPRI Coastal Engineering Sciences Committee
Chair - Christopher Bender, Ph.D., P.E., D.CE, M.ASCE

At Coastal Zone 1993, Gusmao, Cassar & Neves presented a paper describing the observations of quarterly visits to the Northern coast of the State of Rio de Janeiro, made from 1988 to 1992. In this region, where Cape Sao Tome is located, the general coastline of Brazil has a significant change in direction and large shoals are found there. These shoals should be fed by littoral transport from the south, where the coastline is oriented NE-SW. But the main query was to find whether the shoals fed the northern shores, N-S oriented. In addition, about 40 km north of Sao Tome Cape, at the mouth of Paraiba do Sul River, there was a 20 year long history of unexplained severe erosion (Argento 1989, in Coastline of Brazil). This was the initial motivation in 1988 for performing a "coastal discovery mission" to the Northern coast of Rio de Janeiro, but much more than expected was found. Thirty years later, in September 2023, a UFRJ COPRI Student Chapter field trip was organized to the same 100 km long shoreline stretch. The talk will be about what was seen there, and also about what was no longer seen.
