I use WWHM-SWMM (combined EPA HSPF and EPA SWMM software) for continuous simulation hydrology modeling of stormwater systems and urban and natural watersheds.  I use HEC-RAS for backwater analysis.

I am a 3 waters engineer working internationally. For stormwater assessments (mostly for flood assessments) we use Infoworks ICM or DHI (MIKE) software. They essentially couple 1D elements (i.e., pipe networks) to a 2D surface (i.e., surface runoff). Although more expensive, I prefer Infoworks because it has fewer instability issues and has a much better user interface than the DHI products. Internationally I have also seen people use EPA SWMM.

Hi John,

It might depend on what specialty you work in and the level of detail some projects require. I have been using AutoCAD for environmental and geologist work, Microstation for transportation work, but depending on the state you work in it could be AutoCAD too. There are a few softwares that pair up with the different focuses but most of the programs are usually compatible.

Hi John,

I used AutoCAD for drawings and STAAD fro structural analysis. There are many other software's depending on the work: ArcGIS, HEC-RAS, Rstudio
