    Hello,

    I wanted to know about Membrane Bioreactor ofter known as MBR technique for Wastewater Management.I have researched about this technique and found that this is one of the best methods for Wastewater Management.I have little bit query about MBR, can anyone tell me about the pros and cons of this technique? 
    I also wanted to know though this is one of the best technique available then why most of the industries don't use it?
    I am thinking of preparing a lab scale model for the same and someone has any knowledge about this topic then please enlighten me.

    ​MBRs are a good technology but have very high capital and operating costs.  The technology is very well understood.  Companies like GE make excellent membranes.  The negatives of this technology are costs. The positives are they produce high quality wastewater effluent which can be used for certain reuse applications.  Please let me know your intended use and I can supply further information.

    Hello,

    In addition to the above details, I would like to add some more: the main problems/drawbacks in using a MBR for wastewater treatment are the cost of the membrane, energy requirements, and the need for replacement of the membrane when used for a long period of time. Also, membrane fouling causes a lot of operation problems and there must be periodic cleaning. There has been lot of advancements in MBR, like fouling control strategies, and different configurations for effective wastewater treatment and reuse. Let me know what type of pilot plant scale you are intending to design, so that I can share some information on that.

    In submerged configurations, aeration is considered as one of the major parameters in process performance both hydraulic and biological. Aeration maintains solids in suspension, scours the membrane surface and provides oxygen to the biomass, leading to a better biodegradability and cell synthesis.  Water Temperature is another parameter that influences oxygen transfer in the aeration process. Proper modelling of the aeration process can eliminate uncertainties due to these parameters. See my paper attached.
