I just received a copy of the plan (attached).

Q.1. What and how are its listed objectives (S.M.A.R.T.) being addressed in your local,

    regional, state, and districts?

Q.2. What is being done to communicate progress and challenges?

    Cheers,

    Bill

Kenneth Mika provided an update on this topic in March 2024. See https://collaborate.asce.org/professionaltopics/discussion/asce-strategic-plan-progress#bme2ce6c48-6f5b-4f0b-9791-72fdf1f43078 for more details.

Thanks for sharing and bringing up the Five-Year ASCE Plan or Strategy.

    Just thinking loudly:

    • I see that the Plan is shown with the tallest skyscraper Burj Khalifa in Dubai in the background. Does this convey a message? That the future of civil engineering lies in high rise buildings? Engineered and natural systems work in harmony for the benefit of humanity – is written as the vision statement. Perhaps, many people like skyscrapers. But, most people are also wary of concrete jungles – that may serve some purposes – except harmony.

    • I have not seen anywhere – any mention of global challenges – such as global warming or climate change. How so – that the plan does not see this as a challenge? Doesn't it qualify to be mentioned in the ASCE strategic plan?

    • Also, not seen anywhere about respecting cultures and traditions. Don't they matter in the ASCE civil engineering world – in engineered systems? How harmony can be ensured if cultures and traditions – are not respected and accounted for?

    • Or, for that matter, Conformity Issues that define the interdependent systems of things. Don't they deserve attention? Doesn't Quality Control and Quality Assurance deserve mentioning anywhere?

    • Among others, I like this one, the STIMULATE strategic objectives: Accelerate development and adoption of emerging technologies, analytics, and systems thinking.

    • We, engineers and scientists are the greatest applicators of Balance – static or dynamic. We find unknowns from the knowns – by balancing the essential elements of a system. That's how we ensure stability of engineered systems. Perhaps, we are not aware of it – to the extent of not telling others in forceful terms – to follow the principle of balancing things – for the (greater!) benefit of humanity.
