  • 1.  What maketh a PE?

    Posted 03-11-2024 10:01 AM

I just got the email from NCEES saying I passed the PE exam! Woohoo! Yippee!

Naturally I posted this update on LinkedIn to brag (not even humbly). An old coworker reached out and said he noticed I changed my title to PE on LinkedIn and wanted to know how NYS processed my PE exam from NCEES so quickly. I told him I only passed the exam and am still waiting 4-6 weeks for my PE license number.

This interaction got me thinking, Can I call myself a PE yet? Does it even matter?

I am not and cannot stamp a drawing either way but it's only a matter of time before I technically can. What do you think?

This is a good question Daniel. I have a feeling that it is similar to a wedding ceremony. A couple can go through a ceremony, but they are not yet technically married until their marriage license paperwork is filled out and submitted as well.

Likewise, you have passed your exam (congratulations!), but until the state board has received notification of this, and then processed your paperwork and issued your license number, you wouldn't technically "have" your PE.  Thankfully, you have already vaulted the largest hurdle, and the rest of the requirements are only a waiting game.

    Congratulations Daniel!!!

I don't have an answer but am in a similar situation with the EIT/EI. I procrastinated taking the FE quite a bit (do not recommend) and just took it a few months ago, a coworker told me I should add EIT to my email signature, but I never requested an EIT certificate because I'm taking the PE later this year. I couldn't figure out if I'm an EIT without the certificate, so I've held off.

    Hey Renn,

I might try to request the certificate - I had a coworker try to take the PE in PA and the person they spoke with there would not let her apply because they chose to go by the date her certificate was issued, rather from the date that she passed the EIT when counting her years of experience.  She had no problem taking the exam in NJ though.   This might not be the case for most people - just sharing an anecdote.

New York doesn't have that requirement or I'd be really out of luck! All of my experience was gained prior to taking the FE.

That's interesting. I put EIT on my resume after I passed my FE to indicate that I was working towards getting licensed. I never really thought about it as an official title.

I only added EIT after my name when I went to an interview and the engineer recommended I add it to draw attention to my passing the FE.

I never added it to my email signature though. Some reason it didn't feel "worth it". Almost like I was fishing for extra letters after my name.

That makes sense, I think I would have looked into it more closely if I needed an up to date resume.
