  • 1.  Fun Events for Students and Professionals?

    The ASCE National Capital Section Education Committee organizes events to connect professional members and college students from ASCE Student Chapters within our section.  For example, we planned a "Coffee + Connections" event at a local cafe, where students and professionals networked over coffee, tea, and appetizers.  During this event, student chapter leaders had a platform to share their favorite moment of the year.  ASCE NCS also shared information about chapter benefits.  We incorporated fun ASCE trivia into the evening as well.

    I would love to hear your ideas on how best to connect students with professionals, particularly outside of a formal career fair or ASCE Student Competition environment.  

    Students:  What types of events or activities would you like to attend? 
    Professionals:  What type of  events or activities have you planned with student chapters in your section that were well-received?

    As a student and professional, I have attended the University of Houston ASCE Student Chapter Resume Fair. The Resume Fair is usually hosted weeks before the career fair and the main idea is to bring students and professionals to the same room. The environment is set to casual (jeans, shorts, t-shirts) and UH_ASCE will provide breakfast to both students and professionals. This event gives the student the opportunity to talk to a professional about their resume, get feedback to improve it, and usually, these conversations evolve to more personal questions regarding career, professional life, different careers path, etc... I am always eager to attend this event since it helped me a lot when I was a student.

    Besides the normal college visits and football tailgate events, the Kansas City YMG also hosts a mentorship program at the Univ. of Missouri - Kansas City. On Oct 18th, 2019, 14 students and 7 mentors met together for the 2nd annual YMG-UMKC mentorship program. The YMG introduced the program and connected mentors and mentees based on discipline. Lunch was provided. Mentors and mentees worked together to talk about their resume, talk over interviews, and talk about careers. Mentors came prepared to discuss their own job and responsibilities with example project plans. Below is an image of the conversation starters we provide.
