Milwaukee School of Eng

Bio

Academic Activity: Faculty member in the Architectural Engineering department of MSOEsince 1974. Attained the rank of Professor in 1990 and I was appointed to be the AE Program director in 1991. As the Program Director, I had the primary duty of designing and implementing the department assessment plans for ABET evaluation. As PD, I was also responsible for maintaining an active Industrial Advisory Board and using their input to steer the curriculum. I have always believed that an effective teacher needs to understand the reality of the industry. As such, I have maintained an active structural consulting practice. I have worked as a team member with many of the major architectural and engineering firms in Milwaukee.I have been involved with three major curriculum revisions and multiple ABET evaluations, the latest ABET visit was in 2012. In the Fall of 2013 I will be relinquishing the PD position to go back to full time teaching.I have always enjoyed teaching and I have taught an extensive variety of classes including Statics, Dynamics, Strength of Materials, Structural Analysis (I and II), Reinforced Concrete Design (I, II, and graduate level), Prestressed Concrete, Soil Mechanics, Foundation Design (Undergrad and Graduate), AutoCad (I and II), Estimating, Building Investment Economics, and Acoustics (for a time I was the only faculty with course work and professional experience in this topic). I have either modified or written the course syllabi for all of these classes. I have received the Oscar Werwath Distinguished Teacher Award.AEI Activity: I have been a long term member of ASCE-AEI (and also AISC (American institute of Steel Construction), and PCI (Precast Concrete Institute). I was the ASCE-AEI representative for the AE-PE exam to NCEES-EPE and I believe I was a significant help to Mark McAfee in getting the exam approved. From 2004 to 2006 I was the chair of the AE Academic Council and MSOE hosted the Academic Council meeting in 2004. Over the many years I have tried to attend most of the meetings. My biggest goal was to revise the AE ABET criteria toactually match what the AE curriculum should ideally be, and that goal was reached in 2011.
