Mr. Merfeld is a Licensed Professional Engineer in Maine with 36 years’ experience including 29 plus years with the Maine Turnpike Authority a 110 mile Interstate toll road in southern Maine. During the summer of 2024 Mr. Merfeld was asked to step-up as Interim Executive Director until a new Executive Director was hired in April 2025. As Executive Director, Mr. Merfeld was responsible for revenues of $185 million annually, 400 plus employees and keeping the Turnpike in a state of good repair. Since 2000, as Chief Operations Officer for the MTA he has been responsible for 165 employees in the Maintenance, Engineering, Construction, Public Safety and Service Plaza Operations. Mr. Merfeld has been active with the American Society of Civil Engineers serving in local leadership positions including President in 2006, and for past 17 years as Chair of the Maine Section ASCE Report Card committee. Mr. Merfeld served on ASCE’s Committee for America’s Infrastructure from 2009 to 2017 and ASCE’s Construction Institute Claims Avoidance and Resolution Committee from 2005 to 2010. In October 2024, he started a 3-year term as a Region 1 Governor for ASCE. Since 2019 Mr. Merfeld was active in the Transportation Working Group for Governor Mills’ Climate Council. Mr. Merfeld is a past Board Director for the Maine Chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America (AGCMaine) from 2003-2012. Mr. Merfeld has been very active with the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association (IBTTA) serving 7 years as a Board Director (2009-2016), including completing a 40 hour leadership training program in 2010. Mr. Merfeld has a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Maine, an MBA from Thomas College in Waterville, Maine and has attended executive programs at Harvard and M.I.T.
