To add to what Karl says, I would propose working part/half time on one large project from start to finish in the role that you aspire to, and the rest of your time on a variety of projects either supporting role you want to have, or supporting a variety of other roles, such as the conception, planning, ...

It seems very askew to me that engineering graduates, after 4 years of practicing under the supposed tutelage of Professional Engineers are passing the exam at rates in the 60%s. Another thing I'd mention as a recommendation to having separate testing modules that are passed by discipline [e.g. each discipline has to have a passing score, whereas now, a test-taker can get a zero score in one discipline for the general exam, and still pass the exam], is that it seems worthwhile ...

I've worked for most of my adult life in male dominated industries, currently in civil engineering (14 years). A caveat is that civil engineering currently has a good amount of women under 50 percent practicing, so it doesn't feel all that male dominated in the office, but it does in workplace expectations. ...
