Morning, I was recently told by a plan reviewer that a window's wind pressure, which is in the center of a building in Miami Beach, should be calculated using a zone 5 multiplier. I would like to know if there is any reading behind this which I am missing?

I have no problem running the design pressure Calc under a zone 5 scenario, but I am also concerned at the plan reviewer's comments.

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Hello:

I think he is referring to Zone 5, meaning that if the windows are close to the corner of the building you should use that pressure in the calculations.

I would check the Florida Building Code to see if there is something that overrides the standard ASCE zones.  If not, then NO, you would only use Zone 5 wind pressures if the window is located within Zone 5.

Correct, Any window in the edge zone need to be calculated as a Zone 5 and not as an interior Zone 4 wall pressure. Seeing more permit review folks want to know what windows are where relative to Zone 4 & 5 in Florida instead of the generic wind pressure tables some folks use on permit drawings.

​I would also suggest asking the plan reviewer for references to the requirement. 

If you aren't familiar with that requirement and maybe think there's something not quite right then ask the question, "Mr. Plans Examiner, we aren't familiar with this requirement and would like to make sure we address it completely. Please provide a code/statute reference for us so we can ensure we do the best job meeting the requirements."

Sometimes you learn something and sometimes they sputter a little and then remove the comment when they can't back it up.
