  • 1.  Structural Insulated Panel Diapgragm

    I'm looking for some resources on designing a roof diaphragm using SIPs.  Does anyone have experience or resources for this?  The design I'm working with has SIPs directly on top of rafters that are 4ft OC.  Since there's 7.25" of insulation between the rafters and the top layer of sheathing, I can't use the SDPWS manual.  Because the SIPs are attached with Lag-Screws it seems a little overkill to fasten the (short side) panel edges at 6" OC with lag bolts.  And I'm obviously limited by the rafter spacing as well.

    Most SIPS panels have integrated joists at 24" o.c.  So why would it be different than a traditional diaphragm design, yes I know the short side is not getting attachment.  Also you can count on the "ceiling" diaphragm with the OSB on the bottom.

    I recommend checking the SIP manufacturer's product literature. They typically have published diaphragm design values.
