  • 1.  Construction 4.0 Adoption Research Study

    Posted 03-28-2023 06:11 PM

    Hello All!

I was wondering if you would be able to help me find some participants for a research project that I'm doing for my Masters.

Last November I started work on a dissertation as the final part of my Masters in Construction Project Management and my research survey is now out in the wild. The survey should take 5-10 mins to complete depending upon how much input participants want to add in free text boxes for some answers. Ideal respondents would be those involved in technology and innovation in the US built environment, on the contracting side, but I have provided options for people from other industry segments to participate.

The gap that I have found in my research is that there are a LOT of papers on the different types of Construction 4.0 technologies but zero papers that show the actual rate of adoption for each technology across industry segments. As a former colleague said to me today "I believe Adoption has been atrocious!"

The introduction to my research that I have at the start of the survey explains what I'm trying to do as follows:

"The concept of 'Construction 4.0' was first introduced in 2015 to transfer the learnings from the fourth industrial revolution known as 'Industry 4.0' into the construction environment. Industry 4.0 is a set of advanced technologies that intersect to create an efficient cyber-physical environment, that includes such technologies as artificial intelligence; big data; Internet of things (IoT); sensor-based technologies; 3D printing; cloud computing; advanced software such as Building Information Modelling (BIM); and cybersecurity. The concept of Construction 4.0, and the transfer of technologies from Industry 4.0, has the potential to improve project performance, outcomes, and associated project management processes used by organizations within the built environment.

This survey is part of a master's research project to assess the extent of adoption of Construction 4.0 technologies, tools, and processes within the US built environment and will provide feedback on the technologies adopted, challenges and benefits experienced, comparison to previous research, and recommendations for increasing adoption. If you are not in the US built environment but would still like to contribute to the research study, we have made provision for that in the survey questions and your feedback will help compare adoption between industry segments.

The information collected in this survey will only be used for the purposes of this research study and will be published. Where relevant, text entered in open text fields may be used to convey the opinions of participants, but all the survey data will be anonymous meaning that individual responses will not be tied to individual participants. Please feel free to share your feedback in the survey but also respect any confidentiality arrangements associated with your company and/or associated technologies."

If you can participate in the survey or share the survey with others you can do the following:

    Thanks Hasan.

Re: " transfer of technologies from Industry 4.0, has the potential to improve project performance, outcomes . . ."

    Q. Does this include construction site safety?

    Cheers,

    Bill
