Career By Design

Hello everyone,

As most of us know Civil Engineering has been around for a long time, longer than most other professions. Nevertheless civil engineering is continuously developing and improving. There are always new technological developments being introduced and in various areas of civil engineering like Structural, Transportation, and Environmental Engineering. So my question is, what area of Civil Engineering is seeing the most advancements in technological development during the past decade? I've heard several suggest that transportation engineering is seeing more than other areas, but I am super curious to hear the opinion of others. Thank you

My vote would be in design. 10 years ago it was mostly 2D CAD and your profiles were separate and onl showed what needed to be shown. Now design is getting to the point where you can look at an empty field and on your cell phone you can see a 3D diagram of the finished road and where the underground utilities will go. I don't see plansets going away any time soon but in terms of public outreach and shateholder engadgment 3D technology is changing a lot of how we do design and construction.

A few weeks ago, I listened to a talk from a company that is using deep learning and computer vision to transform aerial data into CAD models within a few hours. Pretty impressive work that could potentially save thousands of hours of labor.

I think there has been huge technological advance in all the areas of civil but the one that is most obvious in the design and analysis accross the field. Risk management and material science has also seen tremendous advancement. To say specific areas with largest tech advancement, i think it will be  civil engineering material seen clearly in smart materials, light weight and high strength material

I guess, it's almost a tie for structural, water, geotechnical, environment and sanitary, construction, and transportation. Along searching I found the newest for structural are carbon nanotubes, desolenator uses solar desalination in our water engineering, microchip technology in geotechnical, not to mention horizontal drilling in the geothermal, air quality monitoring and water quality testing instruments, computers, groundwater monitoring equipment, oil-in-water monitors, radiation detectors, volatile organic compound analyzers, and industrial equipment for environmental engineering, spacex's hyperloops in transportation, and Building Information Modeling (BIM) Software. Virtual Reality and Wearables. 3D Printing. Artificial Intelligence for constructions technology.

Thank you for your question, I will never try to search for it but now I was stunned by these awesome technologies we have today that's I'm not aware of.
