Founded by NSPE in 1951, Engineers Week (EWeek) is dedicated to ensuring a diverse and well-educated future engineering workforce by increasing the understanding of and interest in engineering and technology careers. Today, EWeek is a formal coalition of more than 70 engineering, education, and cultural societies, and more than 50 corporations and government agencies and will be held this year February 16th to 22nd.  More information about EWeek can be found here: https://www.nspe.org/resources/partners-and-state-societies/engineers-week

With it only being 4 weeks away, I would like to know what you will be doing to celebrate Engineers Week? As K-12 Outreach co-chair of the ASCE Philadelphia YMF Section, I will be leading a hands-on activity at our local science museum on Saturday, February 22nd. We will be doing an activity from Discover Engineering's website: http://www.discovere.org/. If you are looking for event or activity ideas, ASCE also has some great resources on their website at Engineers WeekOur local Engineer's Club of Philadelphia will be hosting multiple events throughout the week which I plan to attend.

Excited to hear what you all have planned!

    Good morning Danielle,

In the Wisconsin Section Southeast Branch, the Branch typically doesn't hold events as a local group, STEM Forward (http://www.stemforward.org/), hosts their annual Engineers Week Banquet (http://www.stemforward.org/engineers-week-banquet-2020); 67 years running! The Branch nominates ASCE Branch members for Engineer of the Year and Younger Engineer of the Year that are awarded by STEM Forward. For the last few years, the Branch typically has one or both of their nominations selected as the Engineer of the Year and/or Younger Engineer of the Year. This year Darryll Berry won Engineer of the Year and last year Kyle Bareither won Young Engineer of the Year and John Kissinger won Engineer of the Year.

In addition this year, the Southeast Branch YMG is hosting their annual Milwaukee Admirals hockey game event on Friday of Engineers Week. The YMG has attendees meet at a local restaurant before the game and then walk to the game. Always a great turnout for Milwaukee Admirals Hockey!!!

Danielle and all my fellow engineers,

On Saturday, February 15, 2020, the Rhode Island Section of ASCE is hosting the free "Eggsploring Engineering Event" for K-12 graders in celebration of Engineers Week. This hands-on, activity driven event will be held at the WaterFire Arts Center in Providence, Rhode Island, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Attendees will explore engineering concepts by viewing the inspiring documentary film Dream Big: Engineering Our World, and then designing and testing egg drop containers. Participants will enjoy working with civil engineers and friends to create containers that keep an egg safe when dropped from a significant height. Volunteers from RI ASCE will share engineering tips while assisting students with design and construction of their containers. At the conclusion of the build-phase, volunteers will test the containers by dropping them from the WaterFire Arts Center Sky Bridge!

This event has been a dream of one of our YMG Board members for a few years, and we are all excited to help make it a reality this year.

    Hello Danielle,

The finals for the Future City Competition will take place in Washington, D.C. during Engineers Week. I am excited to assist along with other members of the National Capital Section. As ASCE and many companies prepare for the future of the civil engineering industry, it is great for us to take note of the next generation's ideas! I hope that the competition encourages elementary school students to pursue careers in STEM. From the looks of alumni featured on the Future City website, this is definitely happening. Also, interacting with 6th, 7th, and 8th graders renews my own sense of imagination and exploration.

The National Capital Section will also host an Order of the Engineer ceremony during Engineers Week. More information on the Order of the Engineer may be found here: https://www.asce.org/order-of-the-engineer/

As noted on the site, the Order of the Engineer was initiated in the United States to foster a spirit of pride and responsibility in the engineering profession.  The goal is to bridge the gap between training and experience, and to present to the public a visible symbol identifying the engineer. Participants take the Obligation of the Engineer and receive a steel ring to be worn as a reminder of their commitment to high ethics and professionalism. I participated in last year's ceremony, and it was certainly a boost to my pride as an engineer.

    Thank you,
    Jameelah
