Career By Design

Hi folks, 

I am looking to add some more podcasts to my list. Does anyone have any recommendations? I would especially love it if they are hosted by fellow civil engineers!

One of the most popular podcasts is Dr. Death - Dr. Death - Wondery - Feel The Story
This podcast requires listener discretion.  Like the medicine, engineering is a self-regulated profession.  I recommend this podcast to learn the pitfalls of self-regulation and to gain an understanding the reporting and disciplinary process for complaints.

The podcast is mostly aimed at PhD candidates and addresses research skills, research mechanics and lived experiences. However, I'm a civil engineering professor and my co-host is a PhD candidate in civil engineering, so we do reflect on and discuss topics related to our field.

Themed attraction Is a great one If you're interested in theme park design - The hosts are a little more from the art and planning side since they are master planing engineers  But I think that's good for engineers- plus yours truly was featured in an episode.

Car Talk.  Click and Clack aren't making new shows but their greatest hits from nearly 40 years of radio broadcasts are.  They mostly talk about car stuff but almost any topic can come up and the weekly puzzler is always fun.

Additionally, if you have an interest in investing, I listen to a podcast called the Meb Faber show.  He used to be a biotech engineer before deciding stocks were more his thing. To be honest, this podcast probably isn't for everyone as it uses a lot of very industry specific investing terms and assumes a general knowledge of a lot of market mechanisms. I don't have those things and probably take away a lot less than other people do from it. What keeps me going back to it is the general takeaways that always seem to converge - it doesn't matter what you invest in, or how you invest, so much as that you invest responsibly.

Twenty Thousand Hertz - Well produced podcast (because it's hosted by sound design professionals) that delves into the history of the word's most recognizable and interesting sounds.

A few other mainstream educational ones I often listen to include:  Planet Money, Planet Money's The Indicator, Freakonomics, Malcolm Gladwell's Revisionist History (only old episodes but great if you haven't heard them yet!), The Inquiry by BBC.

Chuck Marohn was a civil engineer who started noticing some conflicts between engineering practices and human wellbeing. If you can manage to avoid taking his criticism of our profession (and ASCE's infrastructure report card) personally, there's a lot to be gained by listening.

I'm not a big podcast listener - maybe a generational thing - but I really enjoyed the Richest Hill, https://buttepodcast.org/. The subject of this podcast is Butte MT and the past, present and future of one of America's most notorious Superfund sites. It's a cautionary tale of boom and bust and the profound consequences of (bad) decision making. It's a fascinating weave of technical and non-technical issues.

I can back the 538 and Car Talk ones previously mentioned.

In the realm of the sciences one that I like that only had a few shows was "Catastrophe" by Jess Phoenix. She's a geologist/volcanist who in the show looked at various things like oil rig explosions, plane decompressions, etc. The human error, design flaws, and other decision making issues that lead to the catastrophe.

It's not the highest quality of podcast and the show is only like 15 episodes or so, but it was enjoyable to me.
