  • 1.  New Year, New Reading List!

    I'm sure you've all heard "new year, new me" sometime over the past couple of weeks. Every year, I like to take a different spin on that phrase.  Since I've been gaining more and more responsibility at they company I work at, I've found myself diving into personal and professional development books more and more.  I started the year reading The Leadership Pipeline and have set a goal to read (finish!) at least one personal or professional development book a month.

    Are you reading any personal or professional development books in the coming year? What's on deck? I'll share mine below!

    This year I have:

    July - Never Split the Difference

    October - Seven Habits of Highly Effective People (it's a little bit of a cheat because it's a re-read)

    December - Atomic Habits

    I am currently reading "The Dark Tide - The Great Boston Molasses Flood of 1919" by Stephen Puleo.  While I have seen the plaque in memory of the incident in the North End, it never really occurred to me as an engineering disaster, let alone the failure of a steel structure.  The book is a full account detailing the construction of the 2.3 million gallon tank, it's failure, and the resulting aftermath.  At the time molasses was used to distill alcohol for munitions, which were in demand during the war.  After the war, the process was switched to produce rum in a final rush before prohibition took effect.  So in that way, societal pressures were a contributing factor to the cause.

    You've got some excellent books here! I hope you've been making progress on this impressive list. I don't have much time to read these days, but I've been listening to tons of audiobooks. I've listened to both Seven Habits of Highly Effective People & Atomic Habits last year. 

    This year I've listened to:

    This is not by any means an engineering book, but one of the best books I have ever read was Man's Search for Meaning by Dr. Viktor Frankl. He is an Austrian Holocaust survivor who recounts how he was able to continue finding reasons to carry on despite the nightmare situation that he lived through.
