I would like to honor the achievements of Hattie Scott Peterson in celebration of African American History Month and National Engineers Week!

Ms. Peterson graduated from Howard University in 1946 and is believed to be the first African American woman to earn her Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.   Ms. Peterson worked at the U.S. Geological Survey in 1947.  She also worked with the local Army Corps of Engineers (ACE) in Sacramento, California in 1954, where she was the first female engineer.    (Sources: Please read more here, as well as here.)

Her career story greatly motivates and inspires me.  I am fascinated to hear other stories of African American achievements in engineering during this special week and beyond!  Please share any you have.

    Thank you,
    Jameelah

    Thanks for sharing, Jameelah!

As for who I would like to share, I didn't have to look far. The President and Vice President of my very own employer (Charles and Veronica Toran) strike me as deserving of recognition as well. Not only are they each-other's work spouses, they are actually married as well. They founded an engineering consulting firm about 25 years ago, and have consistently managed to grow their company services, number of offices, and employees. They are a hard-working "power couple" and its been a pleasure to be part of their staff and see they way they've worked together to manage the firm during my time here.

The following link provides more information about them and the company they've built. https://scitekanswers.com/our-leadership/
