Career By Design

Did you know that with your ASCE membership, you can earn up to 10 free PDHs through ASCE's library? There are over 150 on-demand webinars to choose from in many topics including Architectural, Codes and Standards, Construction, Engineering Mechanics, Ethics, Geotechnical, Infrastructure, Management and Practice, Structural, Sustainability, and Transportation. Webinars must be selected and used within the membership year (January 1 – December 31). Any unused webinars will be lost at the end of the calendar year, so there are only 30 more days to choose and complete them. My recent favorites have been "Public Speaking - How to Plan, Design, and Deliver a Presentation" and "Engineer Your Own Success: 7 Key Elements to Creating an Extraordinary Engineering Career"!

While in the process of wrapping up my continuing education at the end of last year, I came across one called "Completion: Failure of Molecules, Bones, and the Earth Itself: Nanotechnology and Bioinspired Materials in Civil Engineering (AWI101812)"

This presentation was a high level discussion of the design of different Civil Engineering materials, and the compared the "Top-down" approach vs the "bottom up" approach of material design. While it wasn't directly relevant to any aspect of my Water Resources background, I found the topic material to be absolutely inspiring and loved the number of comparisons drawn between things found in nature (such as spider-silk) and materials used in engineering.

Your comment reminded me of a great book I read while in college (and dabbling in civil engineering and materials science). It is called Stuff Matters by Mark Miodownik and I found it fascinating. It is not written from a technical perspective but I still learned a lot from it. The book covers a wide range of ordinary materials we could encounter on a regular basis and what makes them remarkable.
