Does anyone know if there is higher resolution topography available to the public on the web that the USGS topo?  I would like to find 1 foot or better contours for watershed mapping.

Have you seen this site - http://serc.carleton.edu/NAGTWorkshops/gis/topographic_data.html?  Not sure if it provides the resolution you seek.

You can also try here for data sources.

I do not know of any public data sources at the resolution you are looking for though.  If you find something I would love to hear about it.

I don't know of a central repository for such information, but some areas of the country are collecting topographic data obtained through LiDAR, which has the resolution you seek.  In our area of the country, county planning departments sometimes have the data.

I agree with the previous post, the best source is usually the local municipality, county or state.  Check the State GIS site for your project area first, as well as any county or other local municipality.  For example, in TN, there are a number of Lidar projects in the works or completed.  The TN State GIS site has an inventory of them (http://gis.tn.gov/).  Also, you can try the federal data.gov site (http://catalog.data.gov/dataset), but that can be hit and miss.

Tom, as Kyle indicates, there are some states and municipalities that are generating LIDAR elevation data and making it available to the public. For example, I recently downloaded some LIDAR elevation data from the State of Missouri. Here's the link to the available MO Spatial Data Information Service:.

    http://www.msdis.missouri.edu/data/lidar/index.html

I'm not aware of any national data repository for such resolution data but depending on what specific area you're interested in, you may find some data.

Many states have a GIS site that will have coverage of detailed topography. Also the National Geodetic Survey has recently had a seminar on the state of obtaining a national collect. In their presentation, they showed where collects had been taken and to what quality. I believe they have another one scheduled for June 26. The presentations are sponsored by QCoherent Events.  qcoherent_events@...

You can also try www.csc.noaa.gov/inventory for publically available lidar.

However, finding data useable at a true one foot contour may be difficult as many collects are driven to FEMA floodplain standards which are at a two foot contour.

Depending on your location there may be a number of resources available at the local and state level.  Contact your state DOT survey division to see what they have and have a look at nearby city websites for GIS and CAD files/data.For example the city of Fayetteville, AR has CAD files with 1 foot contour intervals for the city and the growth area.

You may have already tried this, but many municipalities and counties now have GIS systems on-line with topographic information.  I wouldn't trust it for design, but it is a good source for planning information.

Carroll County, Maryland has, (as do many of the other jurisdictions in Maryland) online topographic maps which purport to be two-foot contours, but we always send a survey crew out to run site-specific topo before doing final design. We often find errors that are great enough to make it impossible to use the county information as a basis for such things as culvert alignments.
