"History of Civil Engineering at St. Anthony Falls":
David Stevens, Public Programs Specialist, Mill City Museum
Abstract: The Falls of St. Anthony, the only major waterfall on the Mississippi River, provided waterpower for the sawmills and flour mills that built Minneapolis and the regional economy. As a result the Minneapolis riverfront was transformed by over a century of infrastructure development. In this presentation historian David Stevens of Mill City Museum will examine highlights of civil engineering on the Minneapolis riverfront and how these historic resources are being put to new uses today. Hear the stories behind the first bridge to span the Mississippi, National Historic Landmark flour mills, Austrian-born engineer William de la Barre (aka "The Sage of the River"), waterpower canals and tunnels, falls stabilization, dams, James J. Hill's Stone Arch Bridge, and the Upper and Lower St. Anthony Falls Locks and Dams.
