  • 1.  Participation in a Study on Ethical Followership in the Engineering Profession

    Posted 12-08-2023 11:54 AM

It's fine to suggest that leaders should be ethical. But what if we are the follower of an unethical leader? What if we identify unethical thinking or behavior within our team that is accepted or overlooked? Whether we see ourselves as following a particular leader, a cause, or a calling, what do we do as ethical followers to promote ethics at work?

My name is Dr. Kyle Payne, and I'm pleased to invite professional engineers in the United States to participate in a qualitative study on ethical followership. If you would be open to discussing how you have navigated ethical dilemmas in your work, I would love to interview you. These interviews last up to one hour and are semi-structured, allowing us to focus on experiences that are significant to you.

Participation in the study is voluntary. Your identity as a participant will remain confidential at all times during and after the study. Details about the organizations, teams, or individuals involved are unnecessary. To sign up, please use the link below to schedule a time:

I participated in Kyle's study. We had an enjoyable Zoom discussion of ethics and ethical decision situations. Participation is highly recommended.

Bill, thank you so much for sharing your insights!

After one week of data collection, I'm excited to see threads emerging - professional engineers with different backgrounds, specialties, and interests who share a curiosity about what makes an ethical follower and a commitment to bring out the good in other people. I'm excited to explore further and piece together a theory of ethical followership.

If you know a professional engineer who may be interested in spending an hour talking one-on-one about ethics, please share this post.

A few months ago, I set out to study ethical followership, interviewing professional engineers about their experiences navigating ethical dilemmas, and particularly about their attempts to influence their leader or their peers. Having completed a dozen interviews thus far, I'd like to complete at least a dozen more this month. Do you know a professional engineer whose insights could help us understand how to foster ethical behavior at work?

Please share this post. The Calendly link below can be used to schedule a time. Thank you for your support!

    Hi Dr. Kyle.

Re: "what do we do as ethical followers to promote ethics at work?"

In my limited experiences, what I have seen following an engineer going public

    about clear, unethical behaviors is:

    1. They lose their job.
    2. No other firm or agency will hire them.

    Cheers,

    Bill
