I am looking forward to retirement but I am not looking forward to getting out of engineering entirely. I love what I do.  Does anyone in this forum have experience they can share about consulting on a part time basis, doing plan checking, planning, inspections, quality control reviews, etc?  How does working after retirement affect social security?

I too loved my work, was always active and on the move, but found myself getting tired of the pressures and deadlines so finally retired about five years ago. Fortunately I did not go cold turkey but the firm I retired from offered an on call contract which worked out great for both of us. A planned slow withdrawal is what worked best as I had to learn how to manage my new found free time and office personnel learned how best to operate with my flexibility. May not sound like a burden, but it is different and an adjustment was in order. I got to go back to my engineering roots in the role of technical support personnel to conduct defined tasks, all without the burden of profitability, personnel and sales issues. I probably worked about 300-400 hours the first year and in following years there was less call for my services and it ended after four years. This slow transition allowed me the opportunity to make a smoother transition from full time to retirement. The social security payment has been the same regardless of how much consulting I provided but with increased income, the portion of the social security that was taxable increased. Good luck to you as you start your new adventure in life.
