Historical infrastructure often faces the threat of demolition or neglect, but on occasion, creative ways are found to preserve and repurpose these structures.
One example of this that I have heard of locally to me is the Schuylkill Crossing in Philadelphia. An old swing bridge crossing the Schuylkill River is being re-purposed for part of a pedestrian path:
