    Hi All,

I am reaching out to see if anyone is aware of any speakers who would present an Ethics Seminar virtually for the Metropolitan Section Long Island Branch in January of Feburary of 2023. We are looking for an engaging speaker that would be willing to present an informative virtual ethic's seminar to our members. Perhaps it could be on the ASCE Code of Ethics that was updated in 2020.

Any suggestions would help. Thank you. You can reach out to me at mthogersen@...

    Hi Matthew,

In response to your post seeking a virtual presentation on engineering ethics, I would be happy to provide such a presentation.  I have given ethics presentations in the past (always without charge) to audiences ranging from undergraduate civil engineering seniors to University of Toledo engineering alumni to PEs attending an Engineers Foundation of Ohio continuing education conference to regional chapters of ACEC and IEEE.  The four presentations I have developed and given are:

    1. Introduction to Engineering Ethics
    2. Ethical issues in Bidding and Marketing
    3. Ethical issues related to reopening college campuses during the pandemic
    4. Ethical issues relating to Prevention through Design

If any of these may be of interest to you, I can send you my slide deck(s) to evaluate.

    Matthew (& others),

Dr. Steve Starrett and Dr. Carlos Bertha made a presentation to the Northeast Branch, Indiana Section, ASCE in the recent past.  The topic was ethics, more particularly the new, revised ASCE Code of Ethics.  They were promoting this presentation to several groups and I contacted them after reading about presentations then had done to other groups.

I will follow up with an email to you with more details.  Others can likely find either of these presenters through social media searches as well as just through ASCE Collaborate.  I recall reading that Dr. Starrett has recently changed jobs.

Other suggestions are to contact ASCE and find the staff member along with current committee members for the Committee on Ethics.  I do not have recent info. but was on that committee, really a predecessor titled Committee on Licensure and Ethics a decade+ ago.

Hi Mathew.  Last week I gave a lecture on ASCE's Code of Ethics to the junior civil engineering class at Portland State University.  I got lots of positive feedback from the students.  My presentation is on PowerPoint, but the Q and A session at the end seemed to be what put the lecture over the top for the students.  I would be happy to make this presentation again to your branch, so reach out to me and lets settle on a mutually-acceptable date/time for this.

I recently attended an Ethics Presentation by Tara Hoke, JD, at the Louisiana Civil Engineering Conference and Show.  She is a lawyer with ASCE in Reston, VA.  It was an in-person presentation, but she may be willing to provide it virtually.  Louisiana requires one Professional Develpment Hour on Ethics each year and it can get to be very repetitive.  Ms. Hoke's presentation was engaging and different.  She presented a number of real life situations that showed that ethiics is not always black and white, but many shades of gray.  I thought it was the best Ethics presentation I had ever seen.
