  • 1.  ASCE Strategic Plan - Progress?

The ASCE issued an updated Strategic Plan to much fanfare in October 2022. Has anyone seen a summation of evidence of progress against objectives since this plan was issued? ASCE Leadership: it should go without saying, but this is a great opportunity for you to contribute to our member dialog!

We've implemented many things to achieve the objectives in our new strategic plan. Here are five.

    * Premiere of the Cities of the Future film (Advocate: Elevate the visibility of civil engineer's leadership role in society)

    * Released a first-of-its-kind standard, ASCE/COS 73-23: Standard Practice for Sustainable Infrastructure, which provides guidance for infrastructure owners to develop and implement sustainable solutions throughout a project's entire life cycle (Innovate: Champion integration of sustainability and equity in infrastructure solutions)

    * Debuted a new member benefit in January called the ASCE Member Yearly Article Pack, which gives members 5 Articles from the ASCE Library. (Magnify: Provide exceptional value and satisfaction throughout the member journey, from student to life membership.)

    * Opened a Grants and Standards Office (Deliver: Continually improve programs and operations, recognizing strategic trade-offs, to support areas of increasing need.

    * The board endorsed a recommendation from the Board Strategic Advisory Committee to consolidate several current member grades into a single grade of "member" to avoid confusion for those just joining the Society, streamline business operations, reduce costs, and be more inclusive of the entire infrastructure team. (Magnify: Attract new members from the broader infrastructure community)

Thanks for the list. Is there a formal scorecard to track these items, and is there a process in place to evaluate whether these individual initiatives have moved the needle?

The ASCE Board of Direction and Board Strategic Advisory Committee (BSAC) has used dashboards in previous strategic plans and intends to do so with the current 2023-2028 Strategic Plan as implementation continues. The ASCE BSAC is updating the dashboard to monitor the Strategic Plan initiatives and track results. Not all initiatives lend themselves to quantitative assessment so instead we will need a qualitative review, which will require additional levels of evaluation.
