  • 1.  Questions about ASCE's Raise the Bar initiative? Listen to the most recent episode of The Civil Engineering Podcast

Being a Professional Engineer myself and having worked at ASCE for almost five years, currently as Director of Raise the Bar, I am passionate about advancing the civil engineering profession. I was excited when Anthony Fasano, host of The Civil Engineering Podcast, expressed interest in featuring ASCE's Raise the Bar initiative on an episode of the podcast. Raise the Bar is a mission-critical initiative for ASCE and is essential to the sustainability of the civil engineering profession.

Raise the Bar committee member Brad Aldrich and I had a great conversation with Anthony, discussing what Raise the Bar is, why it is both necessary and urgent, and how it relates to ASCE's Civil Engineering Body of Knowledge. We also discussed the future of engineering practice and answered some listener questions.

Listen to the podcast here, and feel free to reply if you have any further questions; we'd love to hear your thoughts!

    Hi Kelly,

Listened to the podcast! It is great to see, actually hear, that Brad and yourself were advocating for raise the bar!

On a similar topic, I was talking to another engineer two weeks ago about ABET accreditation. He had heard that a University was going to let their ABET accreditation lapse because they felt the requirements for accreditation were becoming too much. Have you or any others at ASCE heard anything in relation to this?

    Hi Ken –

Kelly referred your question to me as I handle ASCE's ABET activities from the staff perspective. While we have heard rumors to that effect from time to time, we have seen no evidence of this happening, and are not aware of any programs who have indicated their intention to not pursue ABET accreditation. In fact, we have seen an increase in the number of civil engineering programs seeking accreditation under the civil engineering criteria.
